When she was still learning the nuances of her craft in massage school, Rhonda Lakip-Ochoa wasted no time sharing her newfound powers with those who needed them most. After classes ended, she?d practice what she?d learned that day on her mother, who had cancer, and the seniors under her charge during a day job as a caregiver. Now, as the principle practitioner at A Healing Touch Massage Therapy/Spa LLC, Rhonda draws upon these formative experiences to soothe clients from all walks of life. During in-office sessions, she unknots kinked muscles with bodywork drawn from massage traditions including deep tissue and hot stone. Rhonda and her team of certified massage therapists also schedule in-home appointments, arriving at area doorsteps bearing massage tables, lotions, and calming music.
Although she?s now a full-fledged massage therapist, Rhonda never forgot her commitment to bringing peace to the infirm. Today, she still caters to clients with Alzheimer's and dementia, easing their ills with strokes that are lighter, slower than usual. She also massages individuals undergoing cancer treatments, MS, and other illnesses at her non-profit facility, A Healing Garden.
Vixen Aesthetics arose from a passion for healing people and caring for skin. Medical director Dr. Jerry Greib developed an interest in aesthetics while treating patients in the emergency room. Leann Griffin, a registered nurse and the CEO of Vixen, fueled her passion for skin rejuvenation after caring for patients in the critical-care and burn-intensive-care units. Together, these two helm a staff that beautifies clients with medical and nonmedical aesthetic procedures. Wrinkles relax after injections of Botox or Dysport, and facial fillers such as Artefill, Restylane, and Juvéderm work to restore fullness. The staff rejuvenates complexions with exfoliating microdermabrasions as well as more advanced treatments, such as carboxytherapy—the practice of injecting small amounts of carbon dioxide into the skin to improve the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and lingering marker mustaches. With the assistance of versatile laser systems, they can also remove hair, resurface skin, remove tattoos, and eradicate nail fungus.
A hearty appetite is encouraged at Clancy’s Irish Pub, where a champion burger challenge bates mouths to down a 5-pound behemoth burger and a full pound of fries in less than 45 minutes. Only three customers have ever succeeded, and their pictures reside on Clancy’s wall of fame as a testament to their steely reserve and superhuman jaw strength. In addition to holding photos of these championship mugs, Clancy’s butter-hued walls come stippled with golden brown, as if prophesying the deep-fried goodliness of the menu’s jalapeño poppers and cheesy mozzarella sticks. Amid the glow of neon beer signs and flat-screen TVs, tables load up with pints from the bar’s selection of more than 50 brews, as well as pub classics such as fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and the cheese-and- bacon-slathered chicken Dubliner. After two-handing a signature Jack Daniels chicken sandwich, guests can partake of weekly events such as beer-pong competitions, trivia, and DJ dance nights.
English Gardens began as a single, family-owned nursery in 1954, and has since blossomed into a full-service landscaping and garden center with multiple locations, all owned and operated by second-generation family members. Each location facilitates both indoor and outdoor gardening projects. The florist department brings the outdoor flourish inside by arranging fresh-cut floral bouquets and gift baskets for all manner of occasions. Workshops and in-store presentations also allow the green-thumbed experts to impart advice on common gardening and decorating topics such as building a kitchen herb garden or housetraining a dogwood tree. During the summer season, English Gardens holds a summer planting sale as well as weekly in-store gardening tutorials every Saturday at 10 a.m.
Chili Pepper's Tanning Inc. Megastores’ trophy case is getting full—in addition to being named one of Detroit’s best tanning salons three times in a row by CityVoter, it has acquired accolades from Local 4 and CBS Detroit, which commends its spray tanning. Its growing awards reflect Chili Pepper’s growth; since opening in 2002, Chili Pepper’s has expanded to 15 locations, spreading across Detroit like the buffalo pox.
In every location, five levels of tanning beds turn skin a sun-kissed gold or deep bronze. Mystic Tan sessions let customers avoid things associated with booth and outdoor tanning—UV rays and pool lifeguards who push you in the water to practice saving you. No matter which option they choose, patrons can turn to knowledgeable Smart Tan–certified staff members who help clients decide what is best for their tanning goals.
Dena Marie’s Salon & Spa’s hairstylists specialize in formal updos. Augmented by Lox extensions—crafted from 100% human hair—or held in place by hair balms from Bed Head and Matrix, the formal looks prepare patrons for glitzy events from proms to the salon’s second specialty—weddings.
Their team, which also consists of manicurists, regularly attends continuing-education courses to keep their services up-to-date with the latest beauty trends. Fresh out of the workshops, they turn their shears and dyes toward shaping and coloring manes, and drape frazzled locks with shine during keratin smoothing treatments. They also provide spa treatments that include waxing and paraffin dips that remove dry skin from bodies more effectively than attempting to drive them out by playing annoying music over loudspeakers throughout the night.
