Dark Sun Studios' team of audio, lighting, and film experts draws on decades of production experience to create music videos, films, commercials, and other media. The hands-on class begins with a lesson in the fundamental physics of lighting and quantum equations to determine how many gaffers it takes to screw in a light bulb. Then multimedia professionals illuminate the basics of shot composition and lighting setup, first with Dark Sun's studio-grade Cine-Lux lighting and then with simple and inexpensive hardware store materials. Students utilize the 2,500-square-foot studio's various backdrops, lighting fixtures, and high ceilings as they experiment with light, shadow, and contrast. The class then brings the limelight to the outdoors, where they learn how to mimic moonlight, do battle with dusk, and simulate black holes using only an arc lamp and a roll of duct tape. After a discussion on at-home lighting equipment, everyone leaves with a complimentary handbook.
