What started as a beauty shop operating out of Aisha Khalid's home has now, 20 years later, blossomed into 10 full-service, women-only salons. The aestheticians at Aisha's Salon & Spa were some of the first to bring threading to the faces of Houston ladies, whisking away unruly brows, chin fuzz, and emperor-tamarin mustaches with a thin cotton filament. For body depilation, they turn to traditional waxing, and body polishes and facials leave skin rejuvenated and smooth. Stylists trim, straighten, and color tresses, and makeup artists apply finishing touches with traditional or airbrush products.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part about my job is getting to know my clients and working with them to reach their skincare goals. As my clients' skin gets better, I can tell a big change in their confidence level. It is an amazing feeling to know I was able to help them feel that way.
What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a client?
It is hard to say; I have gotten a lot of great reactions after services. One client's doctor asked if she had Botox, and she could happily tell them she never has, but that it was due to her facials with me that her skin looked so great.

As a 15-year-old living in Brazil, Helena was a little too young to become a licensed aesthetician. So, she improvised. She created her own homemade sugar wax, and perfected her hair-removal techniques on trusting friends and family. When Helena later moved to the United States, she obtained her license and opened a day spa to share her beauty expertise.
Today, Helena and her technicians welcome guests to a spacious haven outfitted with 13 treatment rooms and a number of mani-pedi stations. While waxing remains a specialty, the staff administers treatments that go beyond hair removal. They believe in the healing power of heat, as evidenced by their infrared sauna. The spa's Steamy Wonder full-body therapies similarly use steam and warm mud to purge bodies of toxins and heavy metals, which if left untreated can cause one's name to grow umlauts. Helena also champions massage as a way to alleviate aches, and employs CosMedix and Éminence Organics products during nourishing facials. No matter what the service, the spa places an emphasis on eco-friendly products and practices—perhaps in a nod to the business's non-chemical, hand-mixed roots.
At Elizabeth Esthetics and Massage, cosmeceuticals by Rhonda Allison line the shelves, and issues of Vogue and Architectural Digest are splayed across tables. These artifacts point to the fact that owner Elizabeth Sampson applies a scientific yet creative mindset when embarking on skincare treatments and massages.
Before each service, Elizabeth draws up a treatment plan that targets specific needs, from wrinkle reduction to tension relief. Then she delivers results. During the pumpkin refresher facial, she brightens skin by infusing it with antioxidants; during the deep-tissue massage, she works out concentrated tension with her elbows and thumbs. Elizabeth sees to it that every client feels comfortable during treatments. To this end, she offers complimentary beverages and answers frequently asked questions on topics such as how to pick the right massage modality and whether it's OK to drool on the face pillow.
One of most appealing aspects of Wax Appeal is its devotion to using only hard wax. Applied liberally, hard wax then hardens, cools, and is removed without cloths, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin who are wary of the buckle-up-and-bear it philosophy central to most strip-waxing treatments. Staffers can shed strands from the faces, appendages, and bodies of both women and men, with men’s back waxes inciting an influx of backless business suits.
The staff at Eternity Nails knows more than just nails. Besides their three different manicures and pedicures, they provide gentle waxing and threading services. And aside from lacquering nails with gel polish and affixing acrylic sets to digits, they nourish skin and clear up blemishes with facials and microdermabrasion. Lash extensions and massage therapy round out their litany of pampering options.
