In keeping with the owners’ environmentally friendly philosophy, store items such as food and litter delivery are delivered to customers throughout the city via bicycle.
Encompassing 50 acres of shady trees, streams, and fields, the Holiday House Pet Resort provides a welcoming, pastoral retreat for vacationing cats and dogs. Owners Dr. Laura Weis and Dr. Randy Weis, both veterinarians, live on site and spearhead the resort’s mission to keep pets healthy and happy through high levels of interaction and physical activity. Dogs staying at Holiday House enjoy taking part in nature walks, playtime, massages, and grooming, whereas cats on vacation enjoy private condos outfitted with areas for climbing, sleeping, and pondering string theory.
Shaun Froshour's decade of canine search and rescue experience made him the go-to guy when dogs needed training. Friends and clients swarmed him with requests to work on their canines' behavior problems or watch their dogs overnight. Eventually, Shaun realized he could parlay his expertise and passion for pooches into a business and decided to open the Canine Retreat and Behavior Improvement Center. Known today as Paws-itively Healthy, the center has trained and hosted hundreds of hounds of all breeds.
Froshour and his managing partner, Jill Stouffer, chaperone tail-waggers as they laze, play, and plan book-club meetings at the canine retreat. Grooming services gussy up pups with de-shedding treatments, nail trimmings, and toothbrushings, or the experienced duo can pet-sit or walk dogs as owners travel. Froshour and Stouffer call upon years of experience during obedience training to teach dogs verbal commands and hand signals including sit, stay, and vogue.
When the automobile rolled into town, horses began moving out of cities and into the serene countryside, where they’d no longer have to memorize street signs and obey traffic signals. But even before this pilgrimage, Spring Creek Farm had been offering bucolic respite to weary steeds, continuing what is now a 200-year-long tradition of training and caring for all equine-kind. Today, the historic farm operates under the guidance of owner and director Lorraine Clark, who lives onsite to tend to her 24-stall barn. Each day, Lorraine puts the horses out to roam the nearby fields and streams as well as the well-lit indoor arena—a facility equipped with Perma-Flex footing designed specifically to prevent accidents and encourage breakdance battles between horses and their riders.
When a shop on Ocean Grove's Main Street became available in 2011, fourth-generation resident Cindy Stiles seized the chance to combine her business savvy with her love for animals. She opened Ocean Grove Pet Boutique, which welcomes pet owners and four-legged friends as long as they're vaccinated and leashed. Stiles also enlisted the help of a baker to help make their own all-natural cookies and frozen yogurt. A baker might seem like a misfit at a pet store, but these goodies aren't for the humans. They're for the pets, and Stiles makes sure to give every visiting pup a complimentary cookie fresh from the store's cookie bar.
Aside from the doggie deserts, the boutique also draws in customers with its pet collars, shampoos, and other products made with natural ingredients. Staying eco-friendly is as important to Stiles as being pet-friendly, and as such, there are no plastic bags to be found in the store. Instead, she offers shopping bags made from recycled materials, and when customers bring them in, they receive 50 cents off future purchases and a silent thank-you from every tree they walk past.
Though humans have spent thousands of years domesticating dogs, tail waggers still retain the wolfish desire to roam free—and at Woof World, they still can. With nearly 4,000 square feet of cage-free indoor space—which is covered with cushy rubber mats to prevent injuries—canine companions can build up their social skills with help from an experienced staff member and a book of conversation starters. Throughout their stay, pups have access to an outdoor potty area to keep them comfortable and adherent to their training.
When daycare dogs return home in the evening, overnight boarders get VIP access to a lounge complete with futons, doggy beds, and a king-size bed, where a staff member sleeps all night, right with the pack. All dogs must be vaccinated, and the first day of daycare starts with a test to make sure the pup can handle the excitement and solve basic math problems.
