At 6,531 feet above sea level, Security Service Field is the highest professional ballpark in the United States. It was built in 1988 on the edge of Colorado Springs, and, in August 2012, it welcomed its six millionth fan through the turnstiles. This feat of fandom was but a dream in 1903, though, when the Sky Sox—then the Sacramento Solons—became a charter member of the Pacific Coast League. In 1961, the Solons became the Islanders and relocated to Honolulu, where the franchise remained until 1988, the year it finally moved to Colorado, and the year Pikes Peak began mysteriously sprouting foul poles. Upon arriving in its new city, the franchise adopted the Sky Sox moniker—a tip of the cap to the Sky Sox of the 1950s, who played in the Western League as an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The modern-day Sky Sox have been the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies since 1993, and in 2011, the team earned the nod as Triple-A Organization of the Year courtesy of Baseball America.
Like a ninja star thrown into a westerly wind, Universal Kempo Karate worked its way east from its first Hawaii location, founded in 1966. It arrived in Colorado Springs in 1980, expanding quickly to multiple locations. The instructors honor the programs that were passed down to them, teaching kids physical fitness combined with mental discipline and expanding into combat techniques as they become adults. Students engage calories in battle, burning them in cardio-focused kickboxing classes that eliminate moves with a risk of injury.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
Absolutely. We carefully select the music for our workouts, even ensuring it has the proper number of beats per minute and quality sound equipment to play it on.
Snow-capped peaks peer over Springs Ranch Golf Course, adding a scenic backdrop to a 7,107-yard layout that reflects the player-friendly design philosophy of course architect Richard M. Phelps. In a gesture of sympathy for golfers who crush seemingly perfect drives only to find their ball in the angry grip of a well-concealed bird watcher, Richard placed hazards in plainly visible locations with few to no blind spots. However, transparency doesn't always transfer to success on the course—Springs Ranch packs plenty of hazard-ridden holes that demand precise shots, including the 404-yard, par-4 third hole, where golfers must avoid a pond off of the tee and clear a waste bunker with their approach shot or a perfectly timed kick. Along with two ponds and a gauntlet of bunkers, tall grasses line the fairways, tempering aggressive play and adding an authentic, Scottish feel to the links-style layout.
Springs Ranch also offers a driving range, lessons, and clinics taught by resident aces. After a day at the links, golfers can revive muscles weary from bench-pressing golf carts with a burger, bratwurst, or platter of fish 'n' chips at the Springs Ranch Bar and Grill.
