After completing years of training, earning their certifications, and memorizing more than 500 Pilates movements, aspiring instructors still aren't ready for recruitment at Vita Movement. Owner Patricia A. Robinson looks for one other crucial quality on potential résumés: adaptability. She and her highly trained staff members distinguish their teaching from rote instruction by making personal adjustments for each client. These modifications can be minute or broad, and cater to different fitness levels as well as conditions such as injury or pregnancy. In fact, Patricia specializes in pre- and postnatal workouts, regimens that have been featured on 9 News for their ability to reduce the physical stresses of motherhood. No matter the course, instructors keep a careful eye on their pupils' progress, displaying the keen attention to anatomical detail that helped them win the award for Best Pilates Studio on the 2011 Denver A-List.

The studio keeps its sessions intimate to better tailor its lessons. Reformers by Balanced Body line the brightly lit space, vying for attention with Wunda Chairs and other equipment in addition to a supply of mats, bands, and rollers. The machinery helps tone and strengthen bodies’ "powerhouse," or core, relying on springs for resistance as students stretch into adapted Pilates motions. In addition to Pilates courses, such as jump-board and Reformer classes, students can partake in TRX suspension training and indoor cycling. Pilates Vita also acts as a boutique gym, granting members full access to the all equipment as well as three genie wishes that don’t involve flying or the ability to eat 12 wedding cakes without getting sick.

A third-generation railroad man, Dr. John M. Birmingham wanted to honor his family’s vocation with a monument to trains' role in American expansion. So in 1965, he purchased two early locomotives and refurbished the former Anaconda train station, originally built in 1894, to serve as his ticket office. Offering tours that showcase the area's rich history as a gold-mining hub, the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad opened for business in June 1967.

Ever since, Birmingham's iron horses have chugged through the countryside from mid-May to mid-October every year. Four trains, each a 15-ton coal-fired locomotive, now complete a 4-mile, roughly 45-minute loop from Cripple Creek, past the Midland Terminal Wye, and back to the station, passing many historical mines on the way. Passengers find themselves transported back to the early mining days as a knowledgeable guide narrates the picturesque trip and serves up tidbits of local lore. The train stops briefly for photo opportunities at several points, including Echo Valley and wherever there's a sasquatch willing to give people bunny ears.

Within Game Shack’s digital den, flat-screen TVs line the walls, flickering with the polygonal derring-do of gamers locked in virtual competition with titles for platforms including Xbox, Wii, and PC. While their plush leather video-game chairs make extended sessions as comfortable as they are engaging, Game Shack also brings games to life in their multi-floor, tiered laser-tag arena. Illuminated by black lights, players take aim at opponents against a tropical-themed backdrop depicting a moonlit waterfall, a spooky temple, and tiki men impersonating their favorite Bond villains. The party room hosts large groups for celebrations such as birthdays and special events, with party packages available that arm each member with unlimited laser tag and console gaming. Game Shack also hosts competitive-gaming events, with an official Elo-based ranking system that assigns seeding for tournaments. As players dash and game to their hearts’ delight, the Snack Shack keeps them properly fueled with food such as pizza, hot dogs, chicken wings, Monster energy drinks, and sodas.

James Hiromasa is an authority on krav maga, the self-defense technique that's used by the Israeli Defense Forces. He's on the krav maga advisory board, he regularly trains krav maga instructors, and he has received two krav maga certifications from the Wingate Institute in Israel. His wife, Shannon Lukeman-Hiromasa, also punched her way to two krav maga certifications from Wingate, and earned a CrossFit certification to boot. Together, they've pooled their krav maga, martial arts, and fitness expertise to not only open Colorado Krav Maga, but expand it to four locations. For an idea of the size of the operation, the duo and their staff's krav maga, CrossFit, and martial arts programs collectively combine for more than 55 classes each week, or one for every member in an orchestra.

Total Chaos Paintball brings video games into vivid reality, hosting colorful, officiated skirmishes on a 12,000-square-foot indoor battleground modeled after the Wasteland map from Call of Duty 2. Under constant pursuit by the opposing team, combatants duck down alleyways, hide behind urban debris, or outwit fast-moving opponents with quick presses of the pause button. The center can also simulate the stress of nighttime operations, killing the lights while a sound system broadcasts high-octane tunes to keep heart rates accelerated.
