The staff at Top Shape Fitness, led by principal trainer George Tyler, believes that expert guidance is key to workouts. To that end, the fitness center focuses entirely on personal-training sessions and group fitness classes. The company's freakishly strong roots lie in its signature cardio kickboxing class, known as GT Box. In these sessions, trainers blend kickboxing movements with dumbbell training, plyometrics, and other toning exercises. Elsewhere on the weekly schedule, Latin music plays during Zumba sessions, minds and bodies meld in yoga classes, and TRX suspension classes employ equipment developed by US Navy SEALs.

Helmed by Dr. Mazursky, Wilde Lake Family Dentistry enlists ClearCorrect braces to straighten top and bottom pearly whites with sets of gradually shifting alignment trays. An initial consultation determines whether the treatment is appropriate for each client before the doctor snaps Kodak x-rays of uneven-mouth terrain. Experienced technicians take impressions of misaligned teeth, using them to craft up to 10 customized alignment trays. At each appointment, patients receive two new alignment trays; each tray should be worn for about six weeks, allowing their strong plastic and Socratic reasoning to guide bite marks into perfect symmetry over a period of up to nine months. During chompers' steady odyssey, patients return every six weeks for checkups.

“A lot of players look at the card and think because it’s short that they’re going to play their all-time best round of golf and end up spending a lot of time in the woods,” says head professional Joan Lovelace of the course at Fairway Hills Golf Club. The Ron Pritchard–designed course —which stays neatly within the bounds of 6,158 yards—doesn’t just get its bite from the woodlands about which Lovelace warns. Water comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes, and the second fairway’s wicked dogleg right and stream-guarded bentgrass green costars with collarless shirts in many golfers’ nightmares. The links wind down with a hope-inspiring 18th hole, where golfers with the right mix of skill and luck can make a birdie.

Adjacent to the course’s bermuda-grass fairways, the club’s practice facilities invite players to demolish buckets of balls at a turf range, cleat across a chipping area, or practice whipping a putter out of its holster and twirling it around their thumb. Lessons with the club’s PGA professionals are also available to help hone games.

Course at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par-70 course
  • Length of 6,158 yards
  • Course rating of 125
