For Maria de Sousa, tango dancing was part of her Argentinian heritage. She embraced the style as a way to reconnect with her native country, and traveled back and forth between her American home and Buenos Aires to master her steps. Conversely, for Pierre Baston, his passion for tango began as a foreign fascination. He watched a dinner show while visiting Buenos Aires that enraptured him, inspiring him to immerse himself not only in dance lessons, but historical and cultural research—he still collects authentic tango sheet music from the early 20th century. Both dancers became certified through a master's program at the Escuela Argentina de Tango in Buenos Aires, and now elucidate the art of dipping and spinning at eight Philadelphia locales.
Maria and Pierre walk students of all experience levels through tango's passionate choreography. They host group classes for social learning experiences, and lead private seminars at their studios or a venue of the client's choice. Because they coordinate all the necessary partner match-ups and music, their protégés needn't bring a companion or play Keep Away with a violin's bow to make it whine.

The Athletic Club of York, co-owned by a national collegiate-racquetball champion and an AFAA certified personal trainer, ensures a friendly, laid-back atmosphere with a down-to-earth staff that strives to remember each visitor by name. The 26,000-square-foot gym unfurls enough elbow space for exercisers to wrestle with strength and cardio equipment before overcoming post-workout soreness with services such as massage therapy. The gym's communal vibe also fosters the positive tone of group fitness classes, during which feet master Zumba steps or kickboxing strikes in an aerobic studio. Guests can plunge into the indoor lap pool for self-guided strokes, aquatic programs, or swimming lessons, while children break down and rapidly reassemble slingshots at a Kidz Fit Club boot camp.
Though he had originally studied architecture and interior design, Michael Peluso found his career path to be artistically lacking. Once he took his first glass-blowing class, though, he knew he’d found his true medium. It was a logical fit, as his ancestors had practiced the art in Germany and Italy. Michael has since gained knowledge from numerous glass-blowing masters. He passes on this knowledge to his students in various classes, during which he teaches them how to safely manipulate molten glass and blow it into intensely colored marbles.
Just Plain Yoga wants its visitors to find the perfect fit when it comes to yoga technique. They offer a questionnaire to identify the right class for each student, based on how rapidly or slowly they want to move, as well as whether they want to achieve relaxation, increase flexibility, or build strength in your third eyelash. The studio offers 11 different styles for intrepid yogis, including gentle hatha sessions that link breath to body, and morning vinyasa flow to jump-start the day. Hesitant first-timers are especially invited to the “yoga for any body” class, a gentle, welcoming class for anyone who thinks they are too inflexible or overweight to do yoga.
