As a junior player in the United States Hockey League, Stephen Thiesing had grown accustomed to taking hard hits. Nothing could have prepared him, however, for the full-speed collision that left him convulsing on the ice with a severe spinal-cord trauma. Much to his surprise and disbelief, a subsequent visit to the doctor revealed nothing damaged or out of order. Still in pain, Stephen was sent on his way.
This unfortunate visit planted the seeds of Stephen’s interest in alternative modes of healthcare. Years later, after he had begun his career as a chiropractor, he discovered the source of his pain in a compression fracture in his neck. Bolstered by this discovery, he continued training to find a solution for his aches and eventually founded Thiesing Family Chiropractic Center to provide others with the kind of care that was missing from his own youth.
Dr. Thiesing is joined by Dr. Jennifer Maxey, who also spent her early years fighting against a lack of wellness knowledge. After a youth filled with less-than-nutritious food and drinks, Dr. Maxey found herself in Germany. There, she undid years of poor health with a carefully calibrated diet of high-nutrition foods. Thankful for her own fortunate recovery, she vowed to use her newfound knowledge—as well as her skills as a burgeoning naturopath—to help others find the same success.
Now, the two doctors draw from their training and personal experience to craft specialized treatment plans based on patients’ needs. Spinal adjustments are a central focus of Dr. Thiesing's practice, as they can reduce nervous-system disruptions and help the body right itself naturally. Through a series of targeted adjustments, he relieves pain and stress resulting from injuries, headaches, allergies, and repeatedly carrying one’s boss from his office to the lunchroom. Dr. Maxey handles the practice's wellness wing, helping patients unlock the body's natural healing abilities through everything from wellness and dietary counseling to quantum reflex analysis and therapeutic mud packs.

Designed by legendary golfer and course designer Arnold Palmer, King's Creek Golf Club’s 18-hole, 6,807-yard course meanders through a tapestry of winding creeks and dense tree lines. Stately stone walls run along the banks of several greens, forming a natural barrier to protect the course from rogue lawnmowers. Water comes into play on the majority of the holes, complicating drives and approaches as players advance toward each contoured bent-grass green. Clubbers cruise the course astride a GPS-equipped golf cart, which provides accurate yardages to each green and provides a bird’s-eye view of upcoming hazards so players don’t have to pay off dubious waterfowl. King's Creek Golf Club fosters preround warm-ups with practice facilities that include a grass-tee driving range and a putting green.

While working as a personal trainer to put herself through college, Sarah Moore noticed a strange pattern. Women came to her to tighten and tone bodies that had changed dramatically under the physical stresses of starting a family. But many of these changes had roots in lifestyle as much as exercise routines that could be done at the gym—these women needed life coaching as much as they needed a trainer. As Moore began to counsel her clients informally outside the gym, she began to deepen her study of holistic health, eventually becoming certified in health coaching and colon hydrotherapy.
Today, Moore translates these passions into action through Sarah Moore Health, her health and lifestyle consulting business. Her three-pronged approach to wellness aims to get clients eating healthier, digesting food more effectively, and finding more fulfillment in their everyday lives. Her experiences as a mother of two have helped shape an appreciation for her clients' vulnerability during times of great change, and she'll always go the extra mile to support them, even mailing handwritten thank-you cards when they need extra support.
“This is not a gym,” Kelly Barbera told Southern Exposure Magazine in 2010. “This is a boutique-style studio where everybody knows everybody.” Kelly, a former acrobat, and her husband, Joey—a former wrestler—run Temple Fitness. In their cozy orange-and-highlighter-green space bedecked with inspirational quotes, the two line the walls with everything comprehensive fitness programs need, from kettlebells to a room dedicated to TRX equipment. The studio wears many hats, with the two designing an assorted handful of fitness and health modalities: boot camp for women, strength-training camp for men, baseball cross-training, personal training, and nutritional planning.
Together, they push exercisers through routines characterized by an abundance of positive feedback and motivation, a hallmark of their gym. Periodically, the two open the facility to host Able Youth nonprofit boot camp for kids confined to wheelchairs.
