Gateway Film Center's glowing lights beckon moviegoers over for a viewing of an independent or commercial film, midnight screening of a cult classic, or a free showing of a popular television series, such as Mad Men, reformatted for the big screen. The theater's plush leather seats lovingly embrace audiences as they feast their eyes on digitally projected cinematic features and thwart thirst with fruity cocktails, frozen beverages, and soft drinks from the Martini Shot Bistro. The onsite eatery also supplements typical movie fare with gourmet sandwiches, sushi, and pizza, which are allowed into the theater and inside luggage checked by airport security. During Name Ten Trivia night, Gateway's own Quizmaster Squirrel tests guests' cinema and television knowledge before rewarding winners with movie tickets and other theater-related prizes.

Voted Columbus’s best movie theater in 2010 by readers of Columbus Alive!, Arena Grand Movie Theatre satisfies urges for blockbuster movies, cold beer, and cool, dark, cavernous spaces in which crowds can quietly assemble. Bring along a fellow film fanatic with two tickets ($9 per adult after 6 p.m., $7 for matinee showings, seniors, and students) to a showing at the theater and marvel at Jon Hamm's impossible good looks in The Town or give Betty White's career the boost it so desperately needs by catching her in You Again, coming to theaters on September 24. This Groupon may not be valid for certain movies during the first two weeks of their release—contact Arena Grand Movie Theatre for verification.

And, on the weekends, Patisserie Lallier sweetens the theater’s treat selection with freshly baked pastries.

For 75 years, Drexel Theatre has showcased an eclectic, globetrotting mix of the latest offerings from Hollywood and the independent-film scene. These days, all three of the nonprofit theater's auditoriums screen those pictures with digital projections and Dolby digital sound. Every so often, however, the theater's proprietors dust off their old 35-millimeter projectors for specialty showings of classic films, such as the spooky flicks at Drexel's annual 24-hour horror marathon. That only skims the surface of the Drexel's events lineup, which includes silent pictures with live scores and onetime screenings followed by Q&As with the filmmakers. The membership program introduced in 2011 boasts more than 400 members, whose loyalty and commitment to keeping the theater open is rewarded with discounted tickets, free concessions, and invitations to advanced screenings.

It's a good idea to arrive early at Movie Tavern, and not only if you hate missing the opening credits. Early birds can peruse the extensive menu of chef-crafted American cuisine, from kobe beef sliders to pizza and sandwiches. But even after the show begins, the snacks keep coming. Unobtrusive servers slip in during the show to deliver orders, and can be called on for more drinks or dessert with the push of a button. Guests can even sip margaritas or signature cocktails at the full bar before heading in to the theater. The family-friendly establishment also serves finger food for kiddies.

As for the entertainment, audiences get to enjoy all-digital presentations of first-run films any day of the week, plus Retro Cinema every Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m. as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. Audiences also benefit from Movie Tavern's membership program. Anyone can sign up for free online to receive one free bag of popcorn, plus a free ticket every year on their birthday, special offers, movie news, and invites to screenings and other special events.
