Tastes in Halloween costumes change quickly. This year, Halloween Club is ready with popular Breaking Bad, Despicable Me, and Iron Man costumes. Of course, there are also the classic staples. Creepy masks and props, police uniforms, and pirate apparel aren't forgotten either, allowing patrons to finish their cosplay outfit, celebrate Halloween, or put together a really spectacular excuse for not going into work. That selection also includes outlandish items such as skeletons in mariachi outfits and zombie girl scout costumes.

Describe a time your services really changed a client's life for the better.
We always try our best to accommodate parents' request beyond our policies. Once we had a parent who was a single mom with three children ages 7, 5, and 4. They all wanted to join the art classes, but the mom couldn't afford the individual programs for three different age groups. We understand that life is never easy for anyone, so we just asked what she could afford, and gave each child individual art programs for about one year. Then she moved to another state, but before she left, she wrote me a thank-you card and gave me a book named Peace Maker that was written by her. I feel that if one can make a difference in someone's life, one's life is not in vain.
Sometimes it's all about the little things in life. What supplemental courtesies do you include with your main services to leave clients with a smile on their face?
We give Rainbow Art dollars to students every time they come to the class as a reward for working hard. They can exchange them for prizes or art supplies that they want. We share the happiness of all birthdays, celebrations, and events with treats and gifts.
How is your approach different than that of other professionals in your field?
[Our director Susanne] graduated from Hong Kong SRB college of Education, majoring in art and design. [She] also hold[s] CA teaching credentials and ha[s] more than 20 years teaching experience in Hong Kong and America. [She has] taught children's art programs at East Los Angeles College, and helped prep portfolios during art portfolio prep seminars for high school students.
She says, "Our unique programs are combined Asian and Western styles. My mission is to make everyone enjoy art and appreciate the world with one's heart. Rainbow Art's comprehensive drawing and painting programs maximize the students' potentials in various art projects that go beyond just drawing and painting. We have done live drawing at Chinese New Year festivals, farmers' markets, and children's Chinese opera. We hosted a family event to teach students to recycle and draw on plastic and glass bottles last summer."
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Our students have won prizes from different drawing contests locally and internationally. Beyond our studio location, we also hold art classes for the City of Monterey Park recreation programs. [We host outdoor events] to inspire students to learn from their environment.
Hennessey + Ingalls's eclectic bookstore sells tomes covering visual arts, such as photography, as well as interior design, landscaping, fashion photography and architecture. The founding family still owns and manages its paper-based stock, ensuring that volumes remain well organized according to the length of authors’ moustaches. Originally founded in 1963 as a refuge for rare and out-of-print books, the massive store—the Santa Monica location spans 8,000 square feet—supplies vital reference materials for local architectural firms, museums, art galleries, and schools. Hennessey + Ingalls also runs a small publishing division, which produces and distributes six titles each year, most of which are reprints focusing on California's modernist architecture and postmodernist oil paintings of avocados. They also offer a large selection of journals and notebooks. Hennessey's bibliophiles also purchase good-condition used copies and rare editions from independent owners.
To promote wellness, Wilshire Spa gathers earthly elements believed to have healing properties, designs entire rooms around them, and then heats them to soothing temperatures. Cozy quarters lined with mineral salt help enhance the skin's oxygen absorption, whereas rooms of pure onyx are designed to improve metabolism and relieve muscle stiffness. The mid-temperature charcoal room, meanwhile, provides a quiet space in which to meditate and detoxify, and surrounds patrons with yellow ocher imported from Korea. After spending time in each room, guests can reinvigorate themselves or test the resolve of their mood ring by plunging into a cold bath.
The spa further encourages renewal through massages and facials. Its signature massage combines a Korean full-body scrub, a Swedish-inspired mineral-oil massage, and a shampoo and conditioning treatment for the hair, as well as a cucumber facial mask and warm dip in a milk bath. The decor also serves up tranquility: Renaissance-style murals and an abundance of pink orchids create a sense of calm, and the women's lounge area features pale-green walls crisscrossed by white outlines resembling trees.
For an organization going on 100 years old, the Los Angeles Philharmonic is distinctly unstodgy. The orchestra performs concerts that tunefully blend classical works with new pieces, and continually seeks new ways to engage audiences. Many evenings, for instance, are preceded by an Upbeat Live talk, covering the program's historical and cultural context and opening the floor for Q&As with guest artists. A thriving youth orchestra program, YOLA, shares the joys of classical music with a fresher-faced generation. And the Green Umbrella program invites guests to hear world-premiere compositions. That novel approach to listener engagement seems to have caught on—every year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic shares music with more than two million ears, or three million if you count that secret ear everyone has but no one talks about.
Student-created artwork lines the white walls of Hands-on 3rd's two studio spaces, the second of which belongs to partner company Art Works. The organizations share talented instructors, filling up the schedule at each location with drawing, painting, and sculpting classes from Art Works and yarn-work and sewing classes from Hands-on 3rd's staff. Whether a project requires a fresh stick of charcoal or a darning needle, an ample inventory arms students with the supplies needed to finish their projects, such as sketching a mustache on a dozing deskmate.
