I'm a first-timer. How do you get me ready for the experience?
Just come with an open mind. We go over the basics when we have new students.
What is the one feature of your business that you're most proud of?
That over 99% of our students improve. They usually end up in competition at the high school level, satellite, or open level tournaments.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
Watching a student grow and improve year to year. Not just [in] tennis skills, but [in] other attributes such as practice, dedication, loyalty, respect, and perseverance.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We offer private lessons if you need extra help in the class.
Located in Torrance, our family run public tennis center, hosted by tennis pros Ken & Courtney Hance, offers 8 well-maintained, fully lighted courts, a pro shop, private lessons, group workouts for all ages and skill levels. At South Bay Tennis Center you’ll find something for every member of the family.
Earning all types of praise, including an endorsement from Los Angeles magazine as an exceptional boutique gym, Toluca Lake Tennis Club and Sports Center aims to live up to its reputation. Its private outdoor courts, surrounded by foothills and coniferous trees, play host to amateur and professional baize-ball endeavors. Tournaments include the Grey Goose Singles Challenge, where players compete for tickets to the U.S. Open, and more whimsical pursuits such as the Wimbledon Woodie Tournament, where players of all levels slap wooden rackets against oncoming woodpeckers.
Back in the fitness center, patrons cycle through a bevy of amenities. Swimmers battle the elements in a 60-foot indoor lap pool during aqua boot-camp classes and open swim, or they singe lounge-about calories with the cardio room's clutch of treadmills, Precor ellipticals, and stationary bikes. Wrangling the power of peer encouragement, trainers lead groups through fitness classes that range from Zumba to outdoor boot camp.
No matter who walks onto the court, RAMP's staff of experienced teachers aims to help them perfect their groundstrokes, improve their footwork, and develop a tougher on-court attitude. Once a player at Boston College, Director of Tennis Marc Lucero has distinguished himself as a developer of premier talent as well; he coached 2012 NCAA Champion Nicole Gibbs and assisted in the development of ATP pros Sam Querrey and Ryan Harrison. RAMP Tennis's relationship with top-tier athletes extends to its advisory board, which includes professional baseball pitcher Mark Prior and Bob Isner, father of American tennis star John Isner.
Helmed by two-time Manhattan Open winner Dave Mahoney, the tennis experts at South Bay Tennis Network help players hone their on-court prowess. Mahoney?s style of play emphasizes an attack style with serves and backhand topspin modeled in the style of Pete Sampras and a forehand and backhand slice like that of Roger Federer. Students learn to work toward specific, practical goals in their path to improvement.
