Q&A with Ron Pleune, Owner, Artist

What sets your business apart from your competition?
We offer a fun, relaxed atmosphere with patient instruction. Creativity is encouraged if you want to go a different direction with your painting. Our fine art gallery displays the work of only local artists.

What was the inspiration for starting this business?
Engaging art in all aspects in a relaxed, non-intimidating atmosphere. From beginners to the more experienced, I want people to have fun first. Then the things they learn won't feel academic.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Arrive 15 minutes early to find your seat and apron, and be ready to have fun!

What is the best reaction you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
Proud smiles, and people saying, "I never thought I could do this, but I did. It looks great, and I had fun!"

At House This, keen-eyed staffers help outfit shoppers in distinctive apparel and jewelry and aid them in fulfilling their abodes’ decorative desires. Along with clothing from popular lines such as Hazel, Trinity, 1921 jeans, and Mystree, the shop stocks candles, lamps, mirrors, and furniture. Decorators can spruce up bare walls with framed artwork, prominently display an automobile’s smog-check certificate inside assorted picture frames ($23–$45), or prop up masterpieces in progress on iron easels ($10–$30).

When it relocated in 2011 to Grand Rapids from Grand Haven, its home of more than 25 years, Gallery of Frames brought with it a huge selection of conservation materials. Its team of framers encloses artworks and heirlooms with custom-cut combinations of moulding, mat, and glass. Examples of these skillfully designed frames can be found surrounding pictures of athletes at local Brann's locations, or actual athletes if they’ll just sit still for a minute.
