Working under the motto "If you crave it, we can create it," the staff at Purple Cow Bakery mixes and bakes muffins, cupcakes, and other treats fresh daily, and will honor custom requests if guests call ahead. Staffers also compile fresh salads and sandwiches on house-baked bread, which contribute to a healthy diet when combined with eight glasses of cream-cheese frosting a day.
The Baker's Rack's talented band of bakers and chefs elicit grins and excitement from guests of all ages while helping them to craft tasty recipes. A brief safety and rules review precedes an overview of basic equipment and recipes before stripling chefs taste each ingredient like a gingerbread man sorting his clean and dirty laundry. In between cooking steps, children engage in jubilant activities such as dancing, games, and fun-filled icebreakers. Past workshops have covered kid-friendly culinary favorites such as pizza, caramel, and teatime. A private cooking party for four children follows the same engaging curriculum in a more intimate atmosphere; adult parties fire up easily replicated recipes that reach far beyond the limits of Hot Pockets and upside-down Hot Pockets, spinning new dishes to suit a range of tastes. At the conclusion of both the class and the party, guests get to take home their completed culinary marvels.
Any bakery that bakes colorful cake pops has a healthy sense of fun, but The Mississippi Gourmet has a healthy sense of glam. To make the shop's trademark Glitter Delights, bakers slather fresh strawberries in chocolate and then dust them with a coat of edible, flashy glitter. The bakers make sure their chocolate-dipped cake pops don't get lonely by whipping up a daily revolving cast of cupcakes and baked goods that often do justice to local culinary traditions with red velvet cake and a pound cake as airy as Dolly Parton's beehive.
At Curry n Cake, chefs and bakers offer the twin delights of traditional Indian cuisine and custom cakes. While a front counter shows off decorated cakes—available both whole and by the slice, and with eggless and sugarless varieties available—the restaurant menu reveals a large selection of curries and Indian food. Selections include creamy paneer butter masala, lamb kebabs, and tandoori chicken.
In addition to their familial relation, Jo-Ann Morlando and her daughter Dominica Clementi share a passion for baking. Both women learned to bake as children, inspired by the old-world family recipes passed down through generations by their nonas, or grandmothers. And yet both saw baking as just a hobby—until, under the pressure of constant requests for treats from friends, they decided to open their own bakery. In 2004, Nona's Sweets was born. By 2012, it had been named a Talk of the Town for three straight years, a feat few 8-year-olds—Benjamin Button excepted—have accomplished.
Amid the intimate earth-toned interiors and old photographs that line the walls of Nona's Sweets float the aromas of cafe dishes such as grilled paninis, breakfast sandwiches, and quiche. And yet the main attractions are still Jo-Ann and Dominica's whimsical desserts: the shop displays "shelves of intricate cakes––in the shapes of teakettles and wooden ships, among others," according to the Charlotte Observer. The mother-daughter team crafts these layered desserts with more than a dozen fillings and icings. They also conjure classic Italian sweets and pastries such as tiramisu, sfogliatelle, and cannoli. Their desserts frequently make appearances outside the shop, having featured in events such as the wedding of Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis and as the football in a dream of Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis.
