At Mid Tenn Motorcycle Education Center, nationally certified instructors impart the secrets to safe and street-legal riding. Through their basic courses, students step in on Friday and leave on Sunday with the comprehensive knowledge and skills to bypass the written and driving portions of the state licensing test. The instructors spread tutelage across 5 classroom hours and 10 hours of on-cycle instruction. More advanced students can dip into six-hour experienced-rider courses to practice precision handling, advanced braking, and dodging squirrels. The school also hosts women-only classes that teach terminology and skills free of testosterone-induced wheelie popping.
Make the most of the school year's end and the summer's impending beginning at Maple Hill Sports Center, where gamers of all ages engage in friendly contests. The mini-golf course features a challenging layout of aquatic holes, complemented by amphibious floating golf balls to aid retrieval. Players can take a risk, putt for the win, and net back any failed attempts without dampening their doublet and breeches. At the Aeroball cages, trampolining foes go jump-for-jump, competing for ballistic superiority of the hybrid basketball-volleyball-moon-exploring sport. Back on Earth, ballplayers of all ages can swing away in one of the five baseball and softball batting cages, all of which come standard with options to raise, lower, or bowdlerize the pitching machine.
Standing Stone Farm's Paula Butler, whose cheese making was recently featured on PBS, demonstrates Old-World methods of cheese crafting during small classes held at her boutique dairy-goat farm. During cheese-making workshops, dairy manipulators will learn techniques to create greek feta, marinated feta, classic french chevre, and an easy 45-minute mozzarella, all using farm-fresh goat milk and provided cow's milk. Parched participants in the basic course can sip on complimentary coffee or bring their own alcoholic beverages from home. Upbeat, casual classes take place once or twice a month in the dairy farm's large kitchen with 12–15 students per session. Out on the fields, herds of nubian goats roam free, munching on alfalfa and watching farm-share members pick up their weekly gallon of raw goat milk.
A NASCAR racing experience lets racers and passengers feel the rush of flying around the 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway. During the ride-along, passengers can sit back and sip Slurpees while a professional racing instructor takes the wheel of a NASCAR race car, reaching top speeds of up to 170 mph. Scream in harmony with the screaming engine during three adrenaline-filled laps around the Superspeedway, after which you'll be presented with a 6"x8" picture of the adventure.
After marrying into an Italian family, Let's Make Wine owner Cheryl Lisi discovered winemaking and, at the behest of friends, opened her own shop where everyone could participate in the art. Her stock includes a menu of winemaking kits for varietals from around the globe, such as riesling, Chilean malbec, and Lisi's favorite, Italian sangiovese, stomped with Gucci loafers. In addition to wine-crafting opportunities, Lisi hosts wineglass-painting classes and will soon add beer-brewing supplies to the store's inventory.
