Ohlook Performing Arts Center came on the scene in 2002 and had 4 students in our first class (2 of those being family!) Founded by professional singers, Matthew Lord and Jill Blalock Lord, they continued forward and word quickly grew about this little theatre in this tiny space where kids could come and be themselves.
We are a Preschool & Kindergarten program that offers the Spanish language and culture to children as well as an excellent early childhood education. In addition we offer after school classes, summer camps, and Mommy & Me classes.
Fanny Kerwich, Lone Star Circus’s founder and current creative director, was born with the circus in her blood. An eighth-generation member of a renowned French circus family, she has been performing since age 6, delighting international audiences at Paris’s Lido and Moulin Rouge, Germany’s Circus Roncalli, and San Francisco’s Teatro ZinZanni.
Fanny’s performing experience and artistic vision now guide the nonprofit Lone Star Circus, which is a two-branched operation. Its performance troupe’s grace and athleticism shine during shows. The circus’s school hosts classes for adults and children throughout the week. Beginners’ classes cover a variety of circus skills, from trapeze and aerial silk work to acrobatics and lyra, also known as aerial hoop. Learning to lift and hold your own body weight is a good way to get stronger and see muscle definition quickly.
A lifelong poker player and theorist, founder and head instructor Sean Hansen knows that gambling doesn’t have to be a gamble at all. Big Slick Poker Academy helps students of all skill levels—from absolute novices to experts whose grandfathers were decks of cards—learn the logic and strategy behind one of the world’s favorite card games. The keystone Red Chip introductory course is designed for beginners and experienced players who want to fix holes in their game. Over four weeks, students learn valuable skills such as basic profitable strategy, bet sizing, reading tells, and no-limit theory. BSPA also leads seminars on topics such as starting hands and basic bet sizing, offers individual pre-coaching evaluations for advanced players, and shares bare-bones fundamentals during "The Fish Bowl," a free monthly round table discussion for absolute beginners.
Velocity's coaches, many of whom are trained in kinesiology and exercise science, lead heart-pounding fitness programs for adults and children ages 8 and older. The one-hour movement sessions gather an ever-shifting array of exercises calculated to increase kids' speed and agility and challenge grownups' coordination more than their offices' annual air-hockey-based performance reviews. Small groups of 15 people work to reach their peak performance level under the coach's custom-tailored tutelage. After the program, strengthened bodies may measure their tangible successes in greater endurance, improved metabolism, and an abandoned belief that stale Twizzler jousts counts as exercise.
Surya Center for Yoga founder Lisa Marshall discovered yoga while she was pregnant, when she used the ancient practice as a way to calm and strengthen her body and create a better environment for her little-one-to-be. The Surya Center for Yoga community is available to students seven days a week, and they can drop in on classes in 10 distinct modalities, including sessions exclusively for beginners and all-levels classes. A stable of 10 certified instructors guides students through sessions such as a 60-minute gentle Hatha-style yoga class designed to calm the mind and reduce stress, or a Wednesday-night candlelight session that incorporates blocks, straps, and blankets to ease inflexible joints or injured limbs into position more gently than a lamb moves a Jenga block.
