Named after a Sanskrit word that means both “power” and “child,” Bala Vinyasa Yoga teems with poses that are as athletic as they are playful. Experienced teachers draw upon Baron Baptiste’s holistic approach to yoga instruction, which aims to transform the body and clear the mind of clutter such as stress and extremely misplaced gym socks. The studio’s all-levels Power Vinyasa classes challenge students with deep, focused breaths that link arm stands, backbends, and seated poses to create a flowing, dance-like routine. Slow Flow Restorative sessions, on the other side of that coin, move at a more leisurely pace as they open joints with lengthy poses, which, like eulogies read by Carrot Top, are supported by props. To bolster their home-based yoga practice, students can purchase mats and props at the studio’s boutique or practice stretches and bends with its live-streamed classes. Dedicated to comfort and relaxation, the boutique also carries Yogitoes and cozy apparel from Onzie, Om Shanti, and their own BV Signature Wear.

With a diverse range of fitness backgrounds and specializations—from injury rehabilitation and prevention to martial-arts training—Metropolis Fitness & Spa’s staff of 15 instructors ensures a helpful match for nearly every client. The team leads more than 70 group fitness classes per week, including familiar favorites, such as yoga, Zumba, and spinning, and a few of their own inventions, including Video Dance Jam, which pushes exercises through fast-paced choreography. The ballet and jump-rope classes for kids help wee ones burn off extra energy without requiring you to construct a giant hamster wheel in your home. In the main studio, a slew of cardio machines with built-in TVs and weight-training equipment awaits members, in addition to a room stocked with dangling punching bags and TRX bands. To recover from sweat sessions, guests can fuel up with healthful drinks and snacks at the juice bar.

Polestar owes its existence to former dancer Dr. Brent Anderson, who opened the physical-therapy practice in Sacramento in 1990. Seven years later, the good doctor was living in Miami and incorporating Pilates into his therapy treatments to help his patients recover the mobility they needed for everyday activity. With the help of a team of highly qualified massage therapists, physical therapists, and orthopedic specialists, Dr. Anderson treats stiff joints and sore tissue while helping patients use Pilates coursework to build lean, elongated muscles and straighten posture to more effectively lose limbo competitions. The treatments and programs at Polestar heal bodies with the backing of scientific study, rehabilitating patients with Gyrotonic exercises and preventing onstage injury with Pilates training for performing artists.

The idea of the Buddha getting in a fight might be startling, but the image that Brawling Buddha Studio represents is one where both yoga and martial arts find a home. Atop hardwood flooring, yogis stretch, twist, and pose during classes with the help of longtime yoga instructor Hayley Milks. In a padded area nearby, kids and adults learn karate, muay thai kickboxing, and brazilian jujitsu from seasoned sensei Jimmy Guerrero.

Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing With the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 500 calories with each go-round.
