Kids often take after their parents, and Armin Khavari is no exception. After growing up watching his parents run a beauty business, it seemed only natural for him to use his own experience and found Armin Salon-Spa. Alongside a group of skilled stylists, Armin clips and reshapes hair into trendy forms, colors locks with bold new hues, and conditions strands. On the spa side, massage therapists knead away stress, nail technicians retouch hands and feet, and aestheticians restore skin's youthful vitality and original shrink wrap.
Camerino Professional Makeup began more than 22 years ago in Venezuela, when a family of makeup artists wanted to create an environment where customers could feel comfortable and beautiful. Now they have expanded to the United States, where the company’s founders and master makeup artists provide expert makeup artistry and cosmetics classes. Armed with their signature cosmetic line, Camerino makeup artists glam up ladies with professional makeup applications, specializing in eyebrow design, eyelash extensions, perming, and tinting. They also lead express, personalized, and professional makeup classes to teach students how to apply the techniques themselves.
We spoke with Jack Macaluso—Regional Social Media and Web Coordinator at Beauty Schools of America—about how the academies prepare students for careers in the real world and why it's important for the schools to give back to their communities.
On the schools' mission
Above all else, Jack says that the schools "try to focus and harness the students' creativity," while giving them all of the experience and practical skills they need not simply to be prepared to enter the work force, but to succeed and thrive. The relatively lengthy training programs ensure that aspiring stylists, cosmetologists, makeup artists, barbers, and massage therapists fully understand the intricacies of their chosen specialty, as well as what they need to do to continue advancing their future career according to Jack.
On the role of the instructors
With a roster of instructors that includes industry professionals with international spa and salon experience, Beauty Schools of America strives to give attendees a broad view of the numerous options open to them. Jack is also clear that the teachers' guidance isn't limited to classroom environments. When the advanced-level students are allowed hone their talents by performing treatments for actual clients, "an instructor or two will always be there to assist and answer questions," he says.
On the products that the students use during treatments
Students use brand name products like Moroccanoil, Sojourn, Nioxin, and others. Working alongside their instructors at modern service stations, these stylists use these products to craft en vogue cuts, color, styling and therapeutic practices.
On the schools' charitable involvement
Beauty Schools of America embraces opportunities to give back to its communities while providing real-world experience for students at the same time. Jack goes on to describe events where the schools' aspiring barbers and cosmetologists performed complimentary services for underprivileged residents, and he mentions one specific occasion when massage students provided free treatments for community members who participated in a bike ride dedicated to raising awareness about multiple sclerosis.
In 2009, hair flouted its long-standing nonproliferation treaty with the body and began growing at will, and ever since, the skilled beauticians at NY Waxing Center have dutifully kept follicles at bay with its waxing and threading services. In a flurry of choreography involving cloth strips and warm wax, an aesthetician removes unwanted fuzz or flatters facial features with sculpted eyebrows. Clients may also opt for hairstyling, a soothing body massage, or a colorful mani-pedi from the friendly, multitalented staff.
Designed to be a one-stop shop for style-seeking men, Precision Barber Club keeps its clientele looking spruce with sharp haircuts, traditional hot-towel shaves, and a range of aesthetic treatments. Grooming services include mustache trims, haircuts and fades, and styling, and a range of facials helps keep skin looking masculinely clean. The shop also sells a range of grooming products for DIY hair and beard care.
A full-fledged day spa, Massage by Design offers much more than its name might convey. Here, massage therapists practice uncommon modalities, such as Tian Di bamboo massage, in which smooth bamboo sticks are rolled across the back help improve circulation and alleviate musculoskeletal pain. Custom signature massages blend many modalities, including Swedish and deep tissue, to treat each individual's most pressing needs. But beyond the physical manipulation, aestheticians revitalize complexions with anti-aging facials and microdermabrasions. Mani-pedis beautify nails, lash extensions create lavish looks, and waxing gets rid of unwanted hair in a safer manner than leaning over a campfire.
