Recycled furnishings punctuate robin’s-egg-blue walls and glossy, natural bamboo floors inside Chakra Pilates’ tranquil studio, where a team of seasoned instructors steers students through the gentle muscle-toning postures of Pilates and yoga. They position participants atop Reformer apparatuses and mats during Pilates classes, scrutinizing each student’s unique corporeal mechanics and can-can-dance abilities to ensure proper, custom guidance.

Named after the concept of chakras—centers of energy located throughout the body—the studio also singes calories with spirited barre cardio sessions, cultivates pregnancy comfort with prenatal and postnatal classes, and enlightens budding instructors with teacher-training programs.

The staffers at Cruiser King help pedalers to stay on the road with an impressive supply of bikes for sale or rent, handy cycling gear, and comprehensive maintenance services. At Cruiser King’s two locations, employees oversee a steady supply of the latest bikes from Hampton Cruisers and Fuji, doling them into the waiting hands of new owners or riders borrowing them for excursions, which can range from one hour to one week to cross-Atlantic cruises. Though the shop is known for its top-shelf beach cruisers, it also rents out mountain bikes, inline skates, and surfboards.

Q&A with the Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Being a semi-private group studio allows us to give each client more attention. When clients feel and see the progress in their body, they want to come back.

What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
Getting deeper into a pose they previously thought was not possible.

Besides working out, what else can clients do to spend their time at your facility?
Attached to the studio is a massage and skincare practice

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Our class-size maximum is six students, so registering online is a must to ensure space is available. You can download an app that allows you to register on your smartphone. Students can call, but more than likely they will get a voicemail, and that doesn't ensure your space.

Toting mats, towels, and water, students pass beneath snow-white arches to enter a studio decorated only with the occasional book, candle, and plant doing and handstand. Red and coral adorn “the hot room,” the colors’ warmth echoing temperatures that soar to 105 degrees during Bikram yoga sessions. Guided by the Bikram philosophy, instructors shepherd pupils through 26 specific postures that systematically work every area of the body. The practice is designed to increase mobility and restore balance to a host of bodily systems, and utilizes heat to soften the body and help detoxify the body through sweating.
