Jewelry designer Richard Gretz stocks a blend of earrings, rings, pendants, and meticulously crafted custom pieces. Patrons can don an emerald ring ($752), perhaps to celebrate a May birthday, or choose from a large selection of earrings ($35+), such as a pair of tanzanite studs ($240), which leave ears sparklier than a disco ball after its daily glitter bath. Using gemstones gathered during trips to Asia, Richard can transform clients’ visions into a custom designpiece ($2,000–$3,000 on average), be it a dangly pair of earrings or a necklace depicting the family tree. The adornment experts at Richard Gretz Goldsmiths can also repair beloved heirloom pieces ($20+; $100 on average) or resize rings.

While living in Kenya, Leslie Mittelberg was amazed at the skills displayed by artisans and the vast variety of items that were sold in the community marketplace. After returning to the United States, she often longed for a way to access those rich textiles and beautiful sculptures, but found that very few African products made their way to the US. Guided by her passion, she began contacting sellers along the East African coast and encouraging them to export their wares. Today, she employs fair-trade policies to stock stores throughout the country, supporting artisans living in Kenya, Tanzania, the Sudan, Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Mali, Senegal, and Ethiopia.

Freudian Slip decorates figures in flirtatious lingerie and alluring undergarments from brand-name designers. The boutique's racks brim with corsets and loungewear, such as a Honeydew rayon and lace chemise ($38), which flaunts playful ruffles to enliven a Valentine's Day rendezvous or a dull load of laundry composed of white wimples. Berkshire garter stockings ($10) cloak shapely gams in patterned lace, and the glimmer of golden sequins gussies up a pair of Shirley of Hollywood booty shorts ($32). Freudian Slip's accommodating consultants stand by to counsel customers on sizing, styles, or the proper way to use chopsticks.

The open, airy floor space of the boutique is filled with wooden displays strewn with handmade metallic wares and earth-hued gems. Some jewelry is crafted from eco-friendly or recycled materials. Much is locally and American made by independent artists; featured artists get individualized display space for their wares. Select a bunch and make your own necklace, or assemble sigils of significance as a gift to a symbol-loving loved one.
