Jewelry designer Richard Gretz stocks a blend of earrings, rings, pendants, and meticulously crafted custom pieces. Patrons can don an emerald ring ($752), perhaps to celebrate a May birthday, or choose from a large selection of earrings ($35+), such as a pair of tanzanite studs ($240), which leave ears sparklier than a disco ball after its daily glitter bath. Using gemstones gathered during trips to Asia, Richard can transform clients’ visions into a custom designpiece ($2,000–$3,000 on average), be it a dangly pair of earrings or a necklace depicting the family tree. The adornment experts at Richard Gretz Goldsmiths can also repair beloved heirloom pieces ($20+; $100 on average) or resize rings.

We are a 19th-century business in a 21st-century world. We still use a card catalogue for trade credit, but our monthly newsletter is via email. We ignore the past century of retailing and merchandising techniques and remain a sort of messy store stacked with books, yet we have 10KW of solar panels!

"I have been reading comics since before I could read," quips Matt Ashland: EMT, sports coach, and eponymous owner of Matt's Cavalcade of Comics. Ashland began amassing his first comic-book collection in college, and he has kept at it ever since?even after opening his first full shop in 1993. Today, his store boasts a gallery of two million game cards, scores of action figures from TV and film, and an array of vintage?and modern?comic-book memorabilia. The shop also provides open gaming and demos, and it functions as a regular meet-up spot for "Magic the Gathering" league games.

The sales associates of Mattress Mania don?t want to see you that often. It's nothing to take personally. In fact, their intentions are of the utmost sincerity. They just pride themselves on connecting customers with the best quality mattresses that will last a long time.

Instead of whisking a visitor to the most expensive beds, like those stuffed with solid gold feathers, staffers consult with each individual, arming the prospective buyer with info that leads to an informed decision. They'll discuss the customer's desires, needs, and budget, along with the mattress technologies available. Once a decision is reached, the guest goes home with a bed and a 100-Night Comfort Guarantee.

As the story goes, Jeff Tobin and his wife Kathy fell in love over a batch of home-brew in Vermont in the '80s. Since then, brewing is a part of their lives. Focusing primarily on Belgian-style beers, the Tobins keep close watch on the fickle, delicate yeasts that create the full-bodied flavor characteristic of the style. Beer lovers can sip on the finished product at the taproom, where bartenders fill pints and growlers with the Saison D'etre, Gran Cru, and Belgian-style blonde ale. Visitors can supplement sips with to-go bottles and merchandise sold in the taproom.
