After running a sawmill for 15 years in Corvallis, Mode and Babe sold it, retired, and bought a 74-acre parcel of land just because they wanted it—even though they had no plans for its use. At the urging of their friends, Mode and Babe decided to build a nine-hole golf course, not letting their lack of experience with the game dissuade them. Since that spontaneous founding in the 1950s, Marysville Golf Course has been operated by the same family and has served Eugene-area golfers with a nine-hole USGA-rated course that’s appropriate for all ages and experience levels. A first-come, first-served policy rewards early risers and sleep-skipping permagolfers, and new sand traps and greens comprise an elegant landscape over which golf balls briefly orbit before being dragged down by gravity. Additionally, a covered driving range allows for long-distance putting during thunderstorms or temporary ice ages, and the pro shop carries name brands such as Nike and Callaway in addition to a selection of new and used clubs.
A simple interior decorated with OSU memorabilia lends Cravin' Cookies a college-friendly ambience perfect for biting into a variety of freshly baked cookies. Crafted from scratch with ingredients such as cane sugar and real butter, the cookies are fresh out of the oven when the "Now Warm" sign lights up. Cravin' Cookies shares the same space as Roxy Dawgs, which offers half-pound beef franks imported from Chicago, Oregon-made sausages, and Louisiana-style red hots.
An uncoordinated child, Jess didn't really discover her athletic side until college. At that time, though, a group of friends introduced her to activities such as yoga, hiking, rock climbing, and biking. She realized that, with a little training, she could change the way her body worked, and begin to trust her own limbs. Now, as the owner and trainer behind JessBFit Personal Training & Yoga, she helps others transform into healthier versions of the themselves. She teaches outdoor fitness classes and yoga, as well as one-on-one training sessions customized to help clients achieve their personal fitness goals.
During Bite of Benton, dozens of local restaurants, wineries, breweries, and food producers fill the nearly 4 acres of Corvallis Central Park with gourmet bites and complex sips. As guests wine and dine, the sounds of music drifts across the grounds as bands tickle the rafters of the park's famed gazebo. Previous musical guests have included Oregon-based classic-rock cover band Big Boy and the Toys, providing a soundtrack for snacks such as gelato, tacos, hot dogs, and Middle Eastern cuisine.
The staff at The Peacock Bar & Grill whips up classic American pub fare in a convivial atmosphere that has served Corvallis since 1929. Half-pound hamburgers sizzle in more than 15 gourmet varieties, and fresh steak and seafood entrees round out a menu of traditional American fare. Late-night food specials please the after-hours crowd, and catering services lavish special events and get-togethers with mouthwatering morsels. A pool table, video-game machines, flat-screen TVs, and a full bar add to the air of revelry at the tavern that, like the ham radio, has kept mouths busy for more than 80 years. The Peacock Bar & Grill struts its plumage and ability to entertain with nightly events and specials including sports games, karaoke, and live DJs.
