Surrounded by warm, salt water, Miss Mimi smiles as her young student lets go of the side of the pool and swims to her for the very first time. Known as the Swim Whisperer, Miss Mimi prides herself on helping young children and adults overcome their fear of water and learn to swim with the confidence of a derby-winning seahorse. An avid swimmer with more than 21 years of teaching experience, Mimi opened Aqua~Fit in 2008 with the hopes of creating a health center for the entire family. To offer something for guests of all ages, she designed an entire program of swimming lessons, aquatic fitness , and land fitness classes, with programs for all skill levels.
Trainer and fitness guru Justin Bradshaw modeled SGT. H20's CombatSwim after the rigorous training he received as an Army diver. His challenging exercises encourage full-body fitness, using workouts that build stamina, boost metabolism, improve swimming skills, and promote weight loss. Incorporating the best of land-based cross-training systems, CombatSwim includes plenty of high-intensity interval training and pulse-hiking calisthenics. In the pool, water adds extra resistance that amplifies the effects of the exercises, which include swimming sprints, endurance swimming, and treading water with weights. Designed to sharpen the mind as well as the body, CombatSwim leaves exercisers with the same confidence and conditioning as some of the world's elite military warriors.
At Sigma Performance Swimming, dedicated instructors coach everyone from toddlers taking their first splash to adults training for professional trials. The waters in 25-yard indoor and outdoor pools are churned to a froth as swimmers work to hone the school’s three focuses: technique, speed, and endurance. With a ratio of five students to one instructor, pupils are granted ample individual attention as they learn basic aquatic strokes. Students can consult footage of their form during an underwater-stroke analysis to further refine their technique. As their talents grow, swimmers can join Sigma’s nationally competitive teams or set personal goals, prepare for races, and perfect their sailfish Halloween costumes.
In pools heated to a comfortable 90 degrees, Aqua-Tots Swim Schools' experienced instructors pass their aquatic knowledge onto younger generations. Before taking to the waters, the team sorts prospective swimmers between the ages of 6 months to 12 years into one of eight swim levels along with similarly skilled and aged peers. Instructors work alongside the parents of infants and toddlers to practice water safety skills and other swimming fundamentals such as blowing bubbles and singing whale songs. More advanced swimmers, meanwhile, master different strokes and techniques, and instructors incorporate more advanced concepts as their students progress through the levels. Parents can rest assured that their children are in good hands—each of Aqua-Tot's instructors have completed 32 hours in the company's Lessons for Life training program, and a rigorous Water Safety Instructor exam. In addition to swimming lessons, Aqua-Tots offers and hosts a number of other programs including Adaptive Aquatics programs, water therapy sessions designed specifically for children with special needs. They also donate a portion of their proceeds to World Vision, a non-profit organization that helps children and families worldwide gain access to such necessities as clean water, food, medical supplies, and education.
Since 1982, Spirals Gym & Ed-Venture Kids Center has been helping kids hone balance, coordination, and muscle control via competitive gymnastics programs. Today it has expanded to include swimming lessons and afterschool activities, during which kids jump on trampolines and participate in outdoor group activities. Their newest program, the Ed-Venture Kids Academy Preschool, emphasizes both childhood academic learning and physical education, with the intention of helping to prepare children for elementary school. Members of a dedicated staff supervise all activities, whether they are taking place on the 40?x40? carpeted and padded spring floor or on the trampoline.
As a high-schooler, Natalie Tailford became hooked on the sense of peaceful floating that comes from practicing yoga. Later as an adult, she found a way to get that feeling of inner floating both literally and mentally. After spending years in a cubicle, she left the corporate world and ventured out on her own to open Float On Yoga. She graduated from the Divine School of Yoga Therapy, and, as a certified yoga therapist, her average workday now includes meeting clients in breezy area parks. Using the calming waters of Lake Grapevine and Lake Lewisville as studios, Natalie or another Float on Yoga instructor teaches yoga to up to five pupils at a time as the class floats on standup paddleboards. The hybrid classes follow the mantra "Breathe, balance, float," which seeks to align body, mind, and water wings as students practice watery asanas and cobra poses.
