If you’re not sure how to categorize Blind Barber—(Is it a barbershop? Cocktail lounge? Restaurant?)—just call it a men’s clubhouse. That description's just dandy with Adam Kirsch, who sat down with his partners Jeff Laub and Josh Boyd for a May 2012 LA Times interview. "We wanted to create a spot where we could just hang out any time of day," said Kirsch, "whether you’re partying, relaxing, getting your hair cut, or on your computer just doing work." And so they have. The concept was inspired by the Roaring Twenties, when going for a haircut meant socializing, discussing women, dealing cards, and playing Six Degrees of Jay Gatsby. Every cut, trim, and shave in the shop comes with a complimentary beverage and good conversation. With four barber stations arranged in an airy storefront space, and a bar in the back kicking out seasonal and specialty cocktails, beers, and sliders, Blind Barber has revived the art of looking dapper and the sanctity of feeling like you belong.

Walking into Culver City’s Alibi Room bar is akin to walking into a boozy ski lodge with a fireplace along the back wall and a angular wood bar taking up the middle of the room. Low-lit tables and ottomans at the front of the room provide space for patrons to relax and enjoy Alibi Room’s selection of craft beers and specialty cocktails. Drinks like the “Breaking Bad,” with its heat and mix of tequila and mescal, and the Kentucky Mule, a bourbon-based take on the classic Moscow variety, help establish the space as a hotbed for cocktail lovers. But the bar’s biggest advantage over the local competition, by far, comes from its kitchen; Alibi Room serves up a menu of favorites from Kogi BBQ chef Roy Choi’s revolutionary gourmet food truck, as well as rice bowls and other representations of his growing food empire.

Strings of lights twinkle like fireflies over the patio at Il Cielo, webbing out from extravagant chandeliers. Below, flickering candelabras barely illuminate faces already aglow with the radioactivity that comes with being in love. Inside, it’s more of the same—soft yellow lighting, billowy white linens, large windows, and painted cherubim on the ceilings. From one event to the next, a room transforms from cozy fireplace surrounded by scenes of tranquil hillsides, to hearth trimmed with twinkling vines and floors carpeted with rose petals. The fairytale ambiance inspired About.com readers to crown Il Cielo their favorite romantic L.A. restaurant. But before it was a haven for lovebirds, Il Cielo was a home. Celebrity hairstylist Marcel Machu and his family made memories in the space until renovations in the 1940s. Where the dining room now sits, the Machus once posed for Christmas photos. The eatery’s garden was the setting for dinner parties with family and friends. Marcel's children grew up padding along its sidewalk to the waiting car. So when Il Cielo owner Pasquale Vericella went searching for a location for his eatery, the site of the former home cried out to him. He wanted a restaurant that felt homey and welcoming—like the Italian and Pennsylvanian countryside of his childhood—but still inspired magic. With its ample candlelight and delicious Italian cuisine, Il Cielo does just that.

A Chat with Vampire Wine Lounge

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? We offer awesome wines in an elegant, yet relaxed setting; perfect for first dates, happy-hour wine tasting, or just catching up with friends.

Of the products you sell, which are your favorites? You can't beat our wines! We also offer cheese and charcuterie plates, as well as chocolate.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business? We obviously have a lot of passion for wine. Showing people our different wines from the major grape-producing regions of California is very rewarding for us. We like to have a glass of wine and chat, so why not make that our career?

What do you love most about your job? We love meeting new people and teaching people about wine. Hearing the stories that people tell make no two days the same. Making people happy with good wine is also very rewarding.

Vampire Lounge & Tasting Room

At Vampire Lounge & Tasting Room, visitors sip vampire-themed pours such as the Chateau de Vampire Rouseanne and Dracula Syrah from the bar's namesake winery, Vampire Vineyards. Its moniker originated from its ties to Transylvania back in the '90s, but even now that its a purely Napa Valley operation, the name still fits. The Vampire Lounge menu also features imported sparkling wines from Je T'aime, as well as bittersweet chocolates, Vampire espresso, and fine teas.

Behind padded, black-leather doors, a modern speakeasy resides. In an elegant mishmash of styles, chandeliers and a gleaming white baby grand piano give way to the cement floors and thumping music of a European-style discotheque. A full bar mixes up premium cocktails, and the kitchen keeps stomach rumbles to a minimum with shrimp-tempura rolls and moroccan-spiced chicken.
