Vanity Fair says “A-listers swear by [it],” while US Weekly reported catching Hilary Swank and Busy Philipps at the spa. The reason for this celebrity clientele is simple—owner Jodi Shays was born to remove hair. The British aesthetician and waxing specialist reminisces on her website about her childhood, saying her mother thought she was crazy for shaving her legs at the tender age of eight. Years later, Shay found herself practicing waxing on herself and her willing girlfriends, before a friend and mentor finally convinced her to make her hobby a career. Thus, Queen Bee Salon & Spa was born. Shay has decorated each of her two locations with an eclectic collection of thrift-store finds, giving the already comfortable space a chic feel. Waxing is clearly the Queen Bee's specialty; the troupe uses a soft Italian wax to strip hair from every inch of the body, from The Full Monty (a Brazilian wax) to The De Bergerac, which removes nostril hair. Yet, the spa has also earned a reputation for its Epicuren and Sanitas facials, diamond-tipped microdermbrasion treatments, and organic-based airbrush tans that carry the light scent of cherry-almond. For a real pampering session, guests can head to the private mani-pedi suite. Flanked by bright white walls and flat-screen TVs, the room provides the perfect escape, especially once you add in the stack of gossip magazines, a glass of champagne, and, if your lucky, one of Shay's homemade baked goods.
Though The M Salon sits on bustling Rodeo Drive, its interior wraps visitors in zen-like calm. Cool, marble halls lead to the waiting room, decorated, like the rest of the space, in sparse black-and-white hues accentuated with bright orchids. A miniature kitchen lets stylists brew coffee and espresso, slice fruits, and pour wines and champagne as complimentary refreshments for their clients, and modern cabinets tuck away premium products by Moroccanoil, OSMO, Brazilian Blowout, AVEDA and CND.
The carefully designed space by Pooya Goudarzi from VerteX design studio was long the dream of The M Salon's owner, Marjan. She began with a cosmetology license that followed with numerous certifications from Brazilian Blowout to CND shellac. She is also a certified cosmetology teacher by Santa Monica College . In addition to her newly learned specialties, Marjan has a passion for the ancient art of eyebrow threading, which uses carefully twisted cotton threads to gently remove unwanted facial hair.
Billion Dollar Brows With a clientele of stars including Adam Carolla, Ryan Seacrest, and Lauren Conrad, the brow artists at Billion Dollar Brows specialize in red carpet-worthy looks. Their focus on brow care has taken them from a small operation inside an LA apartment to a recognized salon earning mentions from magazines and television shows, such as Vanity Fair and “E! News." Highly-trained aestheticians man each of the chic salon's reclining stations, where they trim, wax, and tweeze arches perfect enough to beautify even the most puzzled of expressions. And to help clients maintain polished looks, Billion Dollar Brows also vends a range of products including pencils, tweezers, and their signature Brow Booster conditioning treatment.
Skilled hands run in Esther’s family. She and her sister, Malonie Banen, work side by side within the same waxing salon. Known for their comfortable and swift sessions, the duo has earned multiple accolades from Allure magazine’s Best of Beauty awards. Though they specialize in Brazilian waxing, they also perform other services, such as eyebrow waxes for hairs that receive uncomfortable amounts of attention from lonely caterpillars. The interior of Esther's Place matches a Tiffany's box to a tee, with the robin's egg hue saturating every wall. Decorative elements, such as pink orchids and green satin pillows, bring a hint of tranquility to the space, enhanced further by a mural, which depicts a rocky ocean that's unfortunately devoid of hunky mermen.
