Trainer and fitness guru Justin Bradshaw modeled SGT. H20's CombatSwim after the rigorous training he received as an Army diver. His challenging exercises encourage full-body fitness, using workouts that build stamina, boost metabolism, improve swimming skills, and promote weight loss. Incorporating the best of land-based cross-training systems, CombatSwim includes plenty of high-intensity interval training and pulse-hiking calisthenics. In the pool, water adds extra resistance that amplifies the effects of the exercises, which include swimming sprints, endurance swimming, and treading water with weights. Designed to sharpen the mind as well as the body, CombatSwim leaves exercisers with the same confidence and conditioning as some of the world's elite military warriors.

Peak Zone Fitness's instructors use science to burn calories. They give each student a heart-rate monitor, which handily helps them figure out when they've reached a level of cardiovascular exercise that burns the most calories. The rest of the workout centers around building slowly through the four preceeding heart-rate zones. Once students reach their peak zone, they sustain for a while before cooling down. This level of engagement keeps the calories burning post workout, as the body consumes more energy to aid with recovery.
CrossFit FCH's Level 1 certified coaches help exercisers gain ground on their fitness goals through a constantly varied, high-intensity workout regimen. During each day at the gym, the crew leads students of all ages through the Workout of the Day's battery of full-body exercises, which might be comprised of everything from dead lifts and sprints to burpees and rowing. The goal isn't simply to rev up sweat glands, though?the exercises aim to improve 10 different fitness skills, including strength, speed, power, and agility. In addition to the fundamental CrossFit concepts, pupils glean basic nutritional information from their coaches, including how to make healthy choices on an everyday basis.
To quote co-owner Christian Washington, Paramount Strength & Conditioning “pretty much trains you to excel in a man vs. orc battle from Lord of the Rings.” Christian began building Paramount’s strength-training philosophy while serving overseas in a Navy response team. Since then, he’s sharpened and refined his program with assistance from fellow trainers Kevin Becker and Stephanie Washington. Students learn the finer points of squats, deadlifts, and the snatch during classes that fuse competitive-style lifts with interval training and bare-knuckle tickle fights. With her keen understanding of what it’s like to be a woman in the weight room, co-owner Stephanie Washington created the gym’s signature Beauty By Barbell class, that relies on unique exercises and offers an approach geared towards ladies.
Q&A with Stephanie Washington, Owner and Coach at Beauty by Barbell
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Here, the coaches are the owners. Our passion and original design for the program is shared with every client because we are at every class. We have created this program through years of research, and have degreed professionals that endorse it. We have each day's workout planned out to a mathematical equation so that every client, beginner or expert, receives the same workout. Most gyms that utilize similar movements give everyone the same weight; therefore, everyone gets a different workout. That is unfair programming. We record and track all efforts from clients so that they don't have to. That way when our workout calls for a certain percentage, if they don't remember it, no problem. We have it recorded.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?
We believe that people get what they put into it. And not everyone wants to be a star athlete. We have to respect that. Some people want to be the best of the best, and we respect that, too. We get to know our clients, and if they want to be pushed, oh boy, do we push. But if they want to socialize and have a place to call home, we do that, too. We have an eclectic group and like it that way. We are paid to help the client achieve their goals?and we do exactly that.
What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?
A typical class begins with chatting and warming up: a light jog, dynamic stretching, and mobility. Then we move right into the technique for whatever we're working on that day. Let's use the squat as an example. We will go over the proper squat form and the likely mistakes to look out for. Then I will have everyone perform the squat with NO weight and critique where needed. Then we will move to the barbell. If everyone has mastered the squat, we all stay on pace and perform the determined set and rep scheme. If someone has not mastered it, I or the other coaches will go over the issues in a precise and respectful manner. After the allotted time has passed, we will move on to the next item. The class will always close with conditioning and recovery.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
Upon entry into the program, we will offer to measure and track all clients. Some want to; some don't, but it is a free service that we offer. In addition to that, we can go over lifestyle and diet changes to better aid the goals that the client is hoping to obtain. Our facility is a very welcoming place. We are an uplifting place?we celebrate everyone's achievements like they were our own. It is a big deal to devote yourself to something new, and our veterans have not forgotten when they were beginners.
