Horses charge down an open field, riders willing them faster with clubs raised high in the air. A sudden thwack echoes through the air, and the charge continues. Rather than a scene from a medieval reenactment, this is just another day at The Dallas Polo Club, where riders meet to compete in what’s sometimes called “the sport of kings.” Crowds venture to the club on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays to partake in live international polo matches open to the general public. Sport enthusiasts eager to try their hand at the game can enroll in lessons that teach riding basics, club techniques, and, as they progress, advanced game tactics. Experienced instructors and practiced players alike lead each lesson and pair students with trained club horses so that participants don’t need to tame their own wild stallion on the way to class. The club offers polo lessons for individuals and groups, and also holds as a team-building exercise for corporate clients and other gatherings.
While the Stevens Park Golf Course was a secret to many for years, its great views and close proximity to downtown Dallas have become a real draw to lots of local duffers. A public golf course located in Oak Cliff’s Kessler Park, the recent re-opening boasts a redesign that was finished in 2011 and has been drawing accolades since. All eighteen holes were restored and there are 38 new sand bunkers snatching up balls now, as well as new putting surfaces and refined fairways with almost 3,000 new trees and rosebushes. The results is a leafier, more challenging and ultimately more fun course that is still open to the public. There are men, ladies, junior and senior tees as well, plus a full-service pro shop to keep hackers up to date with the latest tips, techniques and tools to make it around the course.
Where there is human life, there is dance. At United Dance Academy, the instructors take an anthropological approach to their adult and children's dance classes by teaching styles from all over the globe. The instructors lead international styles such as the Brazilian samba and African dance, imparting their worldly skills to adults of all ability levels. In addition to perfecting their technique, students can enhance their endurance and ability to bench press a salsa partner in fitness-driven classes such as barre and Latin-based Zumba classes.
Kids age 3 and older can begin their dance voyages with classical styles such as ballet and jazz, or more contemporary styles such as hip-hop. The staff also lends their talents to parties and private events with Bollywood or belly-dance performances, and conduct personal Zumba and Brazilian samba lessons.
