Museums & Galleries in Daly City

Traditionally, the zoo provides the comfort of seeing animals that could not make a surprise visit to your backyard; this is a comfort CuriOdyssey dispatches to give weight to its message of science education. The menagerie of nearly 100 mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and birds primarily showcases local species like the Channel Island fox and the red-shouldered hawk, which have relatively small niches that have been squeezed by environmental degradation and human encroachment. A few native species can be glimpsed within a complex of 25 lush habitats, including a 4,000-square-foot walk-through aviary and a replica of the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Sunny, outdoor gardens fill more than 1.3 acres with plots that rotate with the seasons and plants to attract butterflies and hummingbirds for live study. Among the science exhibits, Tinkering sparks creativity needed to meet future environmental challenges with interactive exhibits that require the collaboration of multiple visitors. All the exhibits are designed to enable close observation and experimentation characteristic of the scientific method. This aim is supported by shows, such as daily otter feedings—spied from behind the glass of a cross-sectioned riverbank—and a variety of classes.

The Wax Museum at Fisherman's Wharf introduces visitors to more than 250 of history's most notable personas with a labyrinth of realistic sculptures situated in elaborate displays. More than 50 scenes span the entire museum, providing ample room for the paraffin personalities to depict a millennium of historic milestones and portray the contemporary world's most popular candles. Wax artisans craft an array of themed exhibits including the far-reaching History section, in which humanitarians, scientists, artists, and dictators live out the impacts they placed on the world. In the Palace of Living Art, patrons witness the inception of their favorite masterpieces, admiring as Mona Lisa sits for her immortal portrait. King Tut's Magnificent Tomb unveils the life of one of the ancient world's most well-known rulers, and the Presidential Library brings past U.S. leaders together to finally determine which one left the milk out.

Planted between mighty palms in Golden Gate Park is the oldest wood-and-glass conservatory in North America. The gleaming white Victorian structure has survived several boiler explosions, closure during World War II, and more than two decades of renovations. In 1998, it was deemed an endangered building—but it was quickly adopted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and completely rehabilitated by 2003. This century-old structure is home to the Conservatory of Flowers, a National Historic Landmark that connects visitors year-round with the exotic flora of the world's tropical regions.

The Conservatory houses four main galleries. In the aquatic plants gallery, cascading water gurgles into pools beneath a glass-and-metal sculpture of a six-foot Victoria amazonica water lily. The mist-filled highland gallery mimics the high-altitude forests of tropical mountaintops with clusters of orchids and ferns. Showcasing another side of the tropics, the rainy lowland gallery replicates lush jungles, housing a 100-year-old imperial philodendron and several cycads, which date to the days when most dinosaurs were just tiny salamanders. The potted plants gallery incorporates man-made works such as copper planters from India, ceramic pots from Burkina Faso, and an urn from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Around the fragrant stillness of these halls, the Conservatory hosts special events such as gardening workshops.

The curators of The GLBT History Museum—the first stand-alone museum of its kind in the U.S.—know the GLBT experience is not the same for everybody. That’s why their flagship exhibit, “Our Vast Queer Past: Celebrating San Francisco's GLBT History,” doesn’t just tell one narrative, but encompasses multiple, sometimes contradictory, perspectives. Broken into sections focusing on themes such as bar life, faith, and drag culture, the exhibition, according to the San Francisco Bay Guardian, collectively “packs a huge emotional and education punch." To illustrate 100 years of the city’s queer history, the exhibit includes everything from retro gay bar flyers to pantsuits worn by lesbian activists on their wedding day in 2008.

Along with its main exhibit, the museum hosts rotating materials from international collections that document the queer experience in countries such as Scotland and South Africa. Every one to four months, the Corner Gallery accommodates a new show dedicated to subjects such as African-American LGBT history or direct action during the AIDS epidemic. Besides exhibitions, the museum educates guests throughout the year with programming such as panel discussions and film screenings.
