The senior horses at The Horse Sense Riding School non-profit organization all arrive as rescues or unwanted steeds in need of a home. The indoor stable's positive, welcoming environment is a direct reflection of instructor Kat Barrett, whose unconditional love for equines began when she started riding at the age of 9. Since then, her passion has evolved into a career teaching the English and Western disciplines of horseback riding. Though proper technique is a focus of Kat's lessons, the true values she passes along are far less tangible, ranging from teamwork and communication skills to compassion—something she clearly has in spades.

Muddy Buddy is a six to seven mile off-road race where partners take turns biking, running, and overcoming a series of five obstacles. At the race start, one team member takes off running and the other mounts a spoked steed. At the first obstacle, the rider will drop the bike, complete the obstacle, and begin running. Once the runner arrives, he or she will tackle the obstacle, find the team bike, and begin peddling. Teams will continue in this leapfrog fashion throughout the course, cumulating in a down-and-dirty crawl through the infamous mud pit before crossing the finish line together to begin their lives as official, legally-sanctioned salamanders.
