For years, Gary Haggas collected vintage barbershop memorabilia, including midcentury Belmont barber chairs and a hot-foam shaving machine from the 1950s. Then, in May 2013, he gave his retro artifacts new life by opening his own barbershop in Brookfield. "Once I discovered barbering, I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life," he told the News-Times.
Though the aesthetic at Gary's Barbershop is old-timey, Haggas's cutting skills are up-to-date: with four years of experience and a master-barber apprenticeship under his belt, he expertly cuts men's hair into styles ranging from conservative scissor-cuts to mohawks and leaves skin enticingly smooth with hot-shave sessions. Complimentary beer and flat-screen TVs make the barbershop a comfortable place to hang out, as does Gary's attitude: one of his favorite things about barbering is "meeting people, getting to know clients and watching kids grow," the News-Times reported.
Body Beautiful of New York, Inc. beckons visitors into a tranquil, classically decorated space to escape the stresses of daily life. Cell-phone silence and adults-only policies keep the peace in the saffron-hued hair salon and the hallways that lead to private treatment rooms, where licensed cosmetologist and aesthetician Gineann lavishes physiques with facials, massages, waxing, and sunless tanning. Although the studio's passion lies in pampering, staffers also bolster health by offering nutritional counseling for those seeking to lose weight or to get back together with Jolly Green Giant exes. Meanwhile, shelves brimming with meditation music, candles, books, and body lotions available for purchase send clients home with a piece of the spa’s soothing atmosphere.
Haircuts done at Kate Emilie's Salon feature natural looking colors, clean lines, and an overall sense of contemporary elegance. Maybe they pick up all of those qualities from the salon itself. The space is as comfortable as it is stylish, boasting cushy matte black seats, decidedly modernist mirrors and light fixtures, and wood countertops with floral highlights. In that space, the stylists deliver organic yet dazzling transformations, whether they're cutting and styling men's and women's hair, or adding a pop of color with Goldwell, Paul Mitchell, and Orbie products. They also offer waxing services for hair that isn't as welcome.
Inside a renovated bank vault, stylists in training cut, color, and style the manes of their clients with Paul Mitchell products and techniques. In addition to foil color and highlights, the student stylists provide services such as chemical relaxers, deep-conditioning treatments, and perms.
After studying at Ricci's Academy in Newtown, Heather Zilliox completed an internship at a local hair-replacement clinic where she learned to work with special-needs cases. A five-year stint at an upscale salon followed, where Zilliox mastered Aveda techniques. Then, in February of 2010, the nine-year hairstyling veteran opened Inner Beauty, where she currently transforms humdrum locks into fetching, face-accentuating 'dos. All visits kick off with a detailed consultation, which helps cuts mesh with each guest's personal style, hair type, and job as a celebrity body double. A shampoo with hair-nourishing Sebastian products cleanses head-bound strands before Zilliox trims away shaggy excess during cut and style services. All tress trimmings also include a brief scalp massage, where the stylist straps a miniature pogo stick onto each finger to dole out cranial kneading. Matrix hair color products offer chromatic conversions to guests looking to change their natural hues, highlights liven up monochrome hair with attention-grabbing texture, or one-step color redresses tresses.
Dawn's Pizzazz crafts personalized coiffing experiences from detailed consultations, helping to earn it a spot as one of Salon Today's top-200 salons in 2011. A salon concierge can tailor a stylist recommendation to suit each client's needs. Cut-and-style odysseys begin with a cranium-racking consultation, which calculates an equation of lifestyle, personality, and hair type to determine a customized shaping strategy. After 30–45 minutes of soaking and scissoring, a final style preps hair for reentry onto sidewalk runways.
