The SoVA Wine Trail lets groups experience its 12 participating wineries through food and wine tasting events, aiming to introduce visitors to the finest vintages crafted by local residents. The events provide the opportunity to chat personally with winemakers and vineyard owners, pairing their bottled beverages with bites from local restaurants. On the east side, wine lovers stop at Molliver Vineyards, which is located on a property that dates back to the 1700s, and Bright Meadows Farm, a winery that operates out of a 117-year-old barn. On the west side, the Brooks Mill Winery doles out fruit wines, and the White Oak Mountain Meadery lets visitors taste the drink our ancient ancestors preferred to drink when they ran out of Mountain Dew.
Short of creating physical clouds to hold people aloft, Mattress Warehouse stocks almost every imaginable furnishing to help customers catch a few Z’s. Rows of name-brand mattresses from Sealy, Simmons Beautyrest, Serta, and Tempur-Pedic entice customers to replace their worn pad for new bedding, such as a standard mattress, a fluffy pillowtop unit, or a memory foam piece that conforms to bodies. Beyond mattresses, the warehouse also carries an ample collection of box springs, full bed sets with rails and headboards, and even premium futon mattresses that revitalize foldable couches.
In both South Boston and its nearby neighbor Halifax, travelers can find small but concentrated commercial centers laid out in easily walkable stretches. Each town sports a becoming block of downtown restaurants, art galleries, and locally owned businesses, as in the clutch of businesses along Main Street in South Boston. There, Bistro 1888 draws dressy-casual locals who gather for expertly prepared New American dishes such as perfectly seared rare yellowfin tuna plated with a wasabi aioli and a bourbon-molasses porterhouse chop served with gingered cranberry applesauce. Out among the rolling Virginian hillsides, abundant golf courses dot the landscape, and iron wielders needn’t travel far to find an open fairway. Just five minutes from the resort, Green's Folly Golf Course exploits the region’s rollicking topography with 18 challenging holes that dip, bend, dogleg, and bridge. Running rivers trisect holes 13 and 14, and the 145-yard second hole requires careful shot placement to keep the early water hazard and rear-green bunkers from reducing oversensitive golf clubs to tears. Golfers should consider making an early tee time to avoid both the heat and the course's typical 10 a.m. rush.
