Harmony Hair Studio & Spa and Mother Earth are so tight they have a secret handshake. Using only all-natural and cruelty-free products, the stylists perform expert scissor-work to yield voluminous layers or apply brand new color to impress friends, family, or a former sylist who isn't over you. Also, should the opportunity arise, peak into the salon's break room, which bares an intricately stenciled full-wall art piece of eco-friendly superheroes who put Captain Planet to shame in the hairstyling department.

Media Hair Stop has been dishing out flashy haircuts and styles for men, women, and kids for more than 10 years. But the stylists do much more than snip off overgrown strands?they also add eye-popping color by Matrix and fashion updos that are classy enough for weddings or spontaneous limo rides. In addition to haircuts, they enhance their clients' beauty with facial waxing, perms, and corrective color treatments.

Since Artur Kirsh founded The Studio CL in 2005, the best-of list in Philadelphia magazine and other media mentions have lauded his salon for its creative cuts. He and his team of extensively trained stylists clip hair with a dry-cutting method, which allows them to sculpt locks into custom ‘dos that retain their shape as they grow out. Along with these unique cuts, Artur’s stylists glide on new hues and rejuvenate shine and smoothness with keratin or Nigelle HY treatments. The beauty crew also specializes in bridal styling, which includes in-studio hair and makeup testing, pampering on the day of the ceremony, and hair treatments that stay in place even when the bride cuts the cake with the traditional wedding chainsaw. After each appointment, clients can maintain their chic new looks by stocking up on brand-name haircare products, including the salon’s exclusive ARTUR line.

Tundella & Co.'s owners, Margarita Gazaryan (Russian-born of Armenian descent) and Gustavo Tundela (from Brazil), seemed destined to end up in the beauty industry. Raised by grandparents who were both hairdressers, Margarita fell in love with the industry early on, whereas Gustavo honed his skills and ability to dry hair by spinning a chair really fast as a fashion model. Today, the duo and their team, including several international stylists, continues to hone avant-garde styling techniques, and Gustavo works as an educator and platform artist for Hotheads Hair Extensions and Natura Keratin, which improves hair nutrition while promoting hair growth. This experience ensures customers, including local celebrities, can rest easy while getting pampered with a variety of hair services and hair-removal and skin-pampering treatments.

Hair Conditioner: Ticket to a Molecular Makeover

Your hair?s sure to feel silkier once your stylist conditions it?learn why with Groupon?s close-up look at conditioner.

Although human hair may look smooth, each strand's outer layer?the cuticle?is actually quite rough. Under dry conditions, the tiny scales that cover its surface become raised and brittle, causing hairs to tangle and lose their shine. Conditioner aims to correct this problem by bonding a particular class of molecules, called cationic surfactants, to the cuticle. This is possible because keratin, the protein that makes up most of the hair shaft, bristles with negative ions, which attract the positively charged surfactants, coating each thread in a thin film that weighs it down and reduces frizz. (The negative charge of keratin is also what causes static whenever positive ions are stripped from the hair?the static that makes it possible to stick a balloon to the wall or to power a miner's headlamp.)

The other ingredients in conditioner don't always need ions to do their jobs well. Humectants suck in water from the surrounding air, thereby moisturizing the hair, and oils simply penetrate the cuticle. Glossers coat the hair with light-reflecting polymers, increasing shine, whereas other ingredients raise the acidity level of the conditioner, which helps protect the hair's protein structure.
