Tom Bacha’s fist and feet are like a force field made of whip-quick cobras. The martial artist holds a second-degree black belt in tae kwon do, an Expert Series instructor certification from Krav Maga Worldwide, and a Brazilian jujitsu teaching certification from Best Way Jiu-Jitsu. At Connecticut Krav Maga, he and five other certified instructors draw on their kick-punching prowess to pass on Imi Lichtenfeld’s legendary martial art, krav maga, used by the Israeli Defense Force and the US Marines. Designed around the instinctual ways people defend themselves, the method gets quick-learned into students’ muscle memory, teaching students to fend off surprise attacks or disarm opponents carrying knives, guns, or prosthetic limbs.

John González, founder of New Amsterdam Fencing Academy, brings his skills as a nationally ranked athlete to the piste, where he works with enthusiastic instructors to demonstrate European fencing techniques. He and the coaching corps teach foil, épée, and saber disciplines during classes that take advantage of the group's collective energy. They lead students through progressive learning approaches—group footwork and conditioning, individual lessons, and bouting sessions— in hopes of preparing students for traditional competitions and unconventional kebab parties.

In a 6,000-square-foot studio painted with gray alleys, championship-caliber coaches infuse fledgling fencers with the dexterity, integrity, and fleet feet necessary to confidently wield sabers, épées, and foils. Several of the educators brandish their experience in world-class fencing, as coach, competitor, or mascot, while training students in tournament-style play. Private rounds with instructors help pupils work their way up to competitive duels during members-only open bouts seven days a week. Classes foster self-discipline and good sportsmanship as well as physical skills including balance, coordination, and long-distance needle threading.

The coaching staff at North Shore Fencers Club has serious pedigree. The three coaches have more than 70 years of combined experience in the sport, marked by career highlights such as coaching the national teams of Russia, Belarus, and Estonia, and winning NCAA championships in 2010 and 2011. The sword-clinking coaches groom students as young as 7 to pursue the same level of success in the weapons of épée and foil—or, to at least improve their fitness, coordination, and confidence. Lessons range from beginner classes for first-timers to private lessons for ambitious fencers looking to take their skills to the next level. More casual participants can also get in on the action through open fencing sessions and recreational camps.
