After owning Duffy electric boats in Newport Beach, California, where the company has its headquarters, the Textor family decided to introduce the fun-filled and stress-free world of electric boating to Lake Norman in 2010. Thanks to the electric motor and patented Power Rudder propulsion device, Duffy boats carry passengers over water with a remarkable speed and maneuverability and cost as little as $1 per day to maintain. Since 1970, Duffy shipwrights have constructed each vessel exactly to the client's specifications, outfitting crafts with Duff-Eze cabin enclosures that allow captains to pilot their ship in any climate and ensure that boats never have to be winterized, covered, or sent to Florida because of cold weather.
Customers can rent out 21-foot Avalon models that carry 10–12 passengers for brief lakefront voyages, dancing to tunes from the onboard mp3 and CD hookups, warming themselves with the heater on chilly nights, and sunbathing on the bow. Specialty cruises entertain guests with floating wine tastings, catered feasts from Lake Norman cottage, and movie nights, and a seasonal schedule of special events dazzles families with upcoming attractions such as electric-boat sleigh rides.

At Sabi, the scents of spiced and marinated meats blend with a mélange of tropical mangoes and spicy peppers in inventive stir-fry dishes and sushi as guests clink glasses of wine and craft beer. The restaurant’s name borrows from the Japanese phrase “wabi sabi,” or “finding beauty in the imperfect,” such as when appreciating the tarnished patina of a bronze statue or the intriguing beauty of a mole. The eatery’s eclectic menus promise feasts of red-curry chicken, Louisiana blue crab cakes, and juicy tenderloin filets, among other Pan-Asian dishes and specialty sushi rolls. As diners savor the blend of Eastern and Western cuisines, they can feel good about a meal prepared under Sabi’s roof, especially on Mondays, when the Chow Down for Charity event raises money for local and national nonprofits, such as the American Cancer Society.
Toast Café’s dedication to top-notch service comes with a unique twist: Every server tends to every table in an effort to keep glasses filled and customer needs met. Meals are speedily fulfilled in the kitchen, as cooks crack pasteurized eggs into sizzling frying pans, whisk the golden yolks into classic flapjack batter, or prop uncracked shells up on high walls in an effort to re-create nursery rhymes. The café’s breakfast menu is populated with inventive offerings such as french toast stuffed with peanut butter and bananas, whereas lunchtime diners can dig into hearty selections including the meatloaf sandwich crowned with american cheese. The Davidson location also has a dinner menu each Wednesday through Saturday, featuring entrees such as walnut-crusted trout and chicken parmesan. Bartenders at both locations pour signature martinis and wines by the glass.
It's been more than a half-century since the first Char-Grill opened its doors on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, but not much has changed at this beloved local chain. Whether in the original cinderblock building or one of the 10 locations that have been added since, people still approach the counter to jot down orders, pass them through the window, and then look on as cooks grill half- and quarter-pound steak patties over charcoal flames.
In addition to the signature smoky-flavored burgers, Char-Grill also fires up grilled chicken, chili dogs, and pulled-pork sandwiches. Milkshakes and fries add to the eatery's classic feel, helping land it on USA Today's list of 51 Great Burgers and reminding guests of simpler times when hamburgers were used as currency.
For more than a decade, Verla Englert has led a staff of trained aestheticians in medical-grade skin and beauty services at Smooth Reflections. Using a Dermaglow II MD medical-microdermabrasion machine, an experienced staff exfoliates, attempting to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and damage obtained from the sun's harsh and indifferent glare. After thorough exfoliations, organic masks soothe and hydrate faces, leaving them with a newfound radiance. Additionally, technicians perform pedicures and manicures with chip-resistant Shellac polishes, and massage therapists offer Swedish, deep-tissue, and traditional massages.
