Any climber who's passed through Davis or Sacramento in the last two decades has probably spent some time in the Rocknasium. Founded in 1992, the mom-and-pop climbing shop is one of the oldest indoor climbing gyms in the United States. Rebuilt for its 20th anniversary, the gym is now bigger than ever, with climbing enthusiasts scrambling over 5000 square feet of recreated terrain. Sporting more than two dozen toprope stations, a 16-foot bouldering wall, and a mammoth lead climbing roof (complete with stalactites), the gym lets climbers practice their craft without ever leaving its cool, climate-controlled confines.

These extensive climbing resources helped the shop establish its tight-knit community of climbers, but Rocknasium's fitness offerings go far beyond the vertical. A full complement of cardio and weight training machines help members meet traditional fitness goals, and a dedicated yoga room hosts a full schedule of group classes. The gym also employs certified personal trainers and other instructors, whose insights and personal attention can optimize any workout routine. No matter what exercises they choose, members can clean up afterward with a hot, relaxing shower complete with towel service.

In addition to meeting the needs of serious climbers, Rocknasium also welcomes beginners looking to make their first ascent. The gym frequently hosts kids' birthday parties, summer and after-school programs, and even corporate teambuilding exercises. They also have a portable climbing wall used for on-location climbing whenever miniature mountains aren't available.

You won't find Let Them Eat Cake!'s indulgent cake recipes published anywhere, since founder Paulette Coffman and her daughters Brittany and Chelsea fiercely guard their culinary secrets from competitors and town criers. But an interview with Sacramento Press in 2010 reveals three signature flavors that are served each day: red velvet, Guinness Stout chocolate, and vanilla. "We’re really kind of geared towards childhood favorites,” Paulette divulged. "But we’re also a little bit more innovative…You can find your standard red velvet here, but you can also find a margarita cupcake here."

In fact, the mother-daughter trio's three staple flavors are joined by a weekly rotation of 24 flavors, and customers can also commission more than 80 other flavors—including vegan and gluten-free options—via special order. These desserts always include real butter, fruits, and pure vanilla, and forgo preservatives since they're baked fresh each morning. Paulette, Brittany, and Chelsea stack the cupcakes into towers, line them up in boxes, and fashion them together as specialty cakes, donating $2 of their Flavor of the Month sales each Wednesday to charity. Alongside steaming mugs of Ritual coffee and Mighty Leaf tea, the Coffman women also dole out scones, breakfast sandwiches, and gourmet cookies that, like hand weights divvied up in a divorce settlement, weigh in at a 1/4-pound each.

Often employed by athletes recovering from workouts or injuries, cryotherapy uses subzero temperatures to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and increase mobility. During each session, up to four guests spend 30 seconds inside an antechamber cooled to -66 degrees Fahrenheit, then 2.5 minutes in a main chamber at -166 degrees Fahrenheit. Though the skin's surface temperature can drop by more than 30 degrees, the treatment's short duration keeps guests' core temperatures at normal levels. Upon exiting the chamber, guests move into an exercise room where they stimulate reparative blood flow by performing a 10-minute cardio workout or visualizing a grocery-store shopper sneak 11 items into the 10-items-or-less line.

US Cryotherapy provides necessary safety gear to keep hands, ears, mouths, and noses warm, and recommends guests come dressed in gym shoes and swimsuits. First-timers must complete a brief physical-readiness questionnaire, which screens for health conditions that may cause complications during cryotherapy sessions or attempts to gain part-time work as an ice sculpture.

Since 1981, the family-owned-and-operated Davis Athletic Club has served as a multipurpose fitness stop for visitors of all ages. Its gym equipment inhabits specialized facilities for strength training, cardio workouts, and martial arts drills, and the indoor soccer field and basketball court accommodate both casual and competitive players. With two heated pools—one for laps and one for functional exercise—members can practice aqua aerobics or earn a master’s degree in floating from swim school. Nearly every room of the 24,000-square-foot space also hosts group classes, channeling the power of camaraderie to transform physiques through Zumba, yoga and Les Mills’s BodyPump routines.

The staff, from certified personal trainers to childcare supervisors, all devote individualized attention to each guest. With amenities including a CrossFit gym and hair salon, the club unites its members under a roof that covers countless approaches to health.

Touting more than 50 flavors of low-calorie, flavor-packed frozen yogurt, Tutti Frutti earned a feature on CNBC and has continued to expand since opening its first shop in 2007. Inside each store, self-service yogurt machines unleash velvety-soft yogurt into accommodating cups or empty purses. Their constantly rotating flavors include royal red velvet, refreshing guava, or choco-peanut-butter. Most flavors fall within the range of 30–40 calories per ounce, with dairy-free options and no-sugar-added concoctions also available. A toppings bar allows eaters to further customize yogurt creations with a spoonful of fresh fruits or a sprinkling of nuts. Their flavors contain ample amounts of probiotics, known for potential health benefits that may include strengthening immune systems and lowering cholesterol and blood pressure.

Ground Zero Clothing and Boardshop?s adroit staff has been equipping athletes with apparel and gear for skateboarding, snowboarding, and wakeboarding since 1997. Harnessing the style and proven functionality of such top-tier brands as TOMS, Volcom, Nike SB, and Burton, they swathe bodies from head to toe in shoes, jeans, and T-shirts. Their collection of Spy and Electric sunglasses protects peepers from whipping winds, and their skateboard decks by Real and Creature help guests skim across surfaces with the speed of an over-caffeinated Zamboni operator. Though their selection of boards and accessories rotates frequently, they typically have skimboards, wakeboards, and snowboards in stock to help their guests defy gravity in style. Additionally, skilled staff members recalibrate scuffed boards or grant patrons a chance to test pilot new ways to commute to work with their equipment repair and rental services.
