Since 1981, the family-owned-and-operated Davis Athletic Club has served as a multipurpose fitness stop for visitors of all ages. Its gym equipment inhabits specialized facilities for strength training, cardio workouts, and martial arts drills, and the indoor soccer field and basketball court accommodate both casual and competitive players. With two heated pools—one for laps and one for functional exercise—members can practice aqua aerobics or earn a master’s degree in floating from swim school. Nearly every room of the 24,000-square-foot space also hosts group classes, channeling the power of camaraderie to transform physiques through Zumba, yoga and Les Mills’s BodyPump routines.

The staff, from certified personal trainers to childcare supervisors, all devote individualized attention to each guest. With amenities including a CrossFit gym and hair salon, the club unites its members under a roof that covers countless approaches to health.

Behind a rough-hewn wooden façade, walls embellished with wheels and cycles surround Apex Cycles & Services' solo employee, Aaron Curtin. While stocking the store with quality bikes and parts from brands such as Kona, Continental, and De Rosa, Aaron builds an excellent rapport with customers by executing thorough cycle services for almost all makes and models. Bike treatments range from basic tune-ups to comprehensive overhauls that include the installation of fresh parts and a deep cleansing. Aaron also constructs bikes from custom components and works with clients to accommodate all budgets by utilizing prviously used parts and allowing patrons to whittle down debts by volunteering at the shop. Aaron can pick up and drop off two-wheelers himself or welcome them into his store with more delight than a BMX rider moving to a neighborhood filled with drained pools.

The class is small, a cluster of hard-working students lift their legs as an instructor walks around them to check posture and adjust forms. The instructors at ReVibe Pilates & Bodywork purposefully keep their Pilates classes intimate to ensure they can attend to each student in turn. This enables the teachers to better help their charges as they build core, arm, and leg muscles by performing exercises on the Reformer machines or on the mat.

In addition to mat and reformer classes, the team also leads Barre ReVibe sessions that use ballet-inspired exercises to create long and lithe physiques. Massage therapists, meanwhile, are on hand to help students recover from injury or stress with treatments such as Swedish massage, hot stone therapy, or group hugs.

The third annual Ceramics Annual of America expo takes over Festival Hall in San Francisco, bringing with it thousands of visitors and a diverse array of ceramics. Dozens of featured artists—who hail from California as well as from farther-flung locales such as Mexico and Italy—offer professional insight via artist-panel discussions and display their wares at personal kiosks. These works range from decorative statues and figures to functional pottery, conceptual art, and recreations of King Tut’s favorite dish set.

The waters of Covell Creek, several ponds, and patches of tall, native grasses shape the 18-hole course at Wildhorse Golf Club—a 6,828-yard track sculpted by award winning golf course architect Jeff Brauer. The natural hazards may not be hospitable to errant golf balls, but they do sustain a thriving population of geese, swans, owls, and a cattail or two that can be used as a pitching wedge. The course features several challenging holes, including a memorable finisher. At 465 yards from the tips, the 18th hole—a par four for men and a par five for ladies—will have even long hitters struggling to reach the green in regulation. To prep swings and putting strokes, golfers can warm up at a 30,000 square-foot chipping and putting green or graze on calorie-rich grass at the 18-stall driving range.

Course at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par 72 course designed by Jeff Brauer
  • Length of 6,828 yards from the tips
  • Course rating of 73.0 from the tips
  • Slope rating of 135 from the tips
  • Five tee options
