Paul Matsumoto has earned black belts in the striking art of kempo karate, the subtle moves of hapkido, and the stick-fighting form known as arnis, and he incorporates elements of each into the education of his students at WarriorMMA. Starting as young as 3, little would-be warriors study martial skills and the virtues of discipline inside the Warrior Training Center. The program emphasizes important character traits such as confidence and work ethic while laying the foundation for increasingly complex combat skills for more advanced classes. To broaden the horizons of fist and feet, Paul teaches mixed-martial-arts training with an emphasis on the grappling art of Brazilian jujitsu and the devastating knee, elbow, and air strikes of muay thai.
The signature workouts at Pilates for Bodies stretch "beyond the core" with dynamic group routines that blend strength training with aerobic conditioning. The instructors helm a lively regimen for full-body toning, segueing through fast-paced maneuvers such as snap crunches and pelvis pushups to engage the entire muscular system. Students practice atop sprung, joint-friendly floors as sunlight illuminates the brightly painted yellow and blue walls and destroys any vampires masquerading as regular people. With three levels of class difficulty, ranging from just a little difficult to challenging, they can test their physical limits from the safety of their respective comfort zones.
Laying a hand on a piece of the ornately carved fauna that chase each other around Funderland’s carousel, one can nearly hear the gleeful shouts of the innumerable happy riders who have graced the attraction since it is was built in 1947. A happy chorus of youthful shouts brings the present day back to life, drifting from rides such as the log flume and the Funderland train ride, which chugs slowly past diminutive rustic cabins under the shade-giving arms of evergreen trees. The Red Baron ride whisks youngsters off the ground, granting an improved view of the 2-acre playground as the tiny crimson planes pirouette through the air. Current owner Sam Johnston pays almost daily visits to the family-entertainment emporium and takes pride in the role the park plays in supporting local causes and helping families spend time together amid constant distractions such as work, TV, and the disco dancers that refuse to leave one's living room.
"Ornate" and "sweeping" only begin to describe the Crest Theatre, whose rich history extends back to 1912, when it was opened as a vaudeville house. Within its gargantuan auditorium, plush seats perch in subtly curved rows while elaborate lights and a sea-blue ceiling wash the space in ethereal hues. Moviegoers settle into the elegant confines to take in both new and classic films, reading the subtitles in a whisper to stuffed animals that forgot their glasses. Out in the lobby, a richly patterned carpet and bronzed floral motif cover the sprawling space as visitors belly up to the bar and snack on high-quality goodies.
All across California, Western Bowling Proprietors Association sends pins scattering at a network of bowling alleys, each with its own personality. In addition to open bowl on automatically scored lanes, many locations host special events that heighten the experience with enhancements such as vibrant lights, lively music, and laser systems that do double duty protecting the alleys' diamond collections. The alleys also house refreshment facilities, pro shops, and diversions that range from arcade games to billiards.
Hardwood floors, exposed brick, lofted ceilings, and paneled windows make Yoga Shala's practice room feel like a hip art gallery. Within this space, instructors help students sculpt stronger, more flexible bodies. Though the instructors welcome students of all experience and fitness levels to every class, they help students reach specific goals and shelves by teaching three yoga styles. Vinyasa classes, with their continuous series of flowing postures, provide a powerful and strengthening practice. Proceeding at a comparatively slower pace, Yin yoga focuses on stretching the body's connective tissues. Kundalini classes emphasize an equal balance of breathing, movement, meditation, and chanting.
