One of the largest sewing machine companies in Northern California, Meissner Sewing & Vacuum Center has been equipping its clientele with sewing machines, sergers, and embroidery machines since it first opened in 1930. At its 20,000-square-foot Sacramento headquarters and each branch location, the family-owned business pairs machines from brands such as Bernina, Brother, Viking, Baby Lock, and Janome with classes and software that can help users hone their skills. Factory-trained technicians roam the shelves and are available to repair broken machines or interpret messages woven by fortune-telling looms.
Trained volunteer guides have led more than 500,000 people through Safetyville USA?s model town since it opened in 1984. The one-hour safety and health tours immerse preschool through third-grade students in learning scenarios. For instance, kids learn to cross a street safely by looking left and the other left. Understanding that each child learns differently, the staff members of Sylvan Learning Center’s numerous study centers design custom lesson programs. Based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews, the staff works with students to help them to firmly grasp basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and how to remember facts without tattooing them to their chest. Programs target students in kindergarten through grade 12 and mold to various learning styles, helping kids to feel more comfortable in the classroom. After-school or summer classes can ready high-school students for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college admissions officers with their superior writing skills, exemplary test scores, and willingness to arm-wrestle the school mascot.
The academy brings together professionals in the fields of childhood-development and literacy to help children in grades K–12 reach higher academically and succeed in the 21st century. Each child who comes to the center for tutoring or enrichment gets the benefit of personal attention during small group or private lessons in a variety of subjects, encouraging creativity and critical thinking. Though many programs are geared toward STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), tutoring in reading and languages is also available.
Since 1977, Huntington Learning Center has employed a battalion of highly trained tutors to help students triumph over math misgivings and phonics fears. Young scholars ages 5–17 begin their gold-star-seeking journey with an academic evaluation lasting 3.5 to 4 hours to pinpoint their individual needs. After the exam, the center's staff will create a detailed analysis of each student's strengths, personal goals, and spitball-accuracy stats. In one-hour one-on-one sessions, tutors encourage pupils to work at their own pace while focusing on areas in which improvement is needed. Huntington often welcomes parents into its centers of cerebration for complimentary workshops on creating a learning environment free of distractions such as stress and constant gossip about the family dog.
