As Shawon Brown-Gullette told Robin McMacken of the Dayton Daily News, she keeps a box of tissues near her hair-system station at Infinitee Trichology Centre. But they aren't there to curb sneezes or fold into origami. According to Brown-Gullette, they absorb the tears of joy and renewed self-confidence that the hair-loss expert often witnesses as she outfits clients with discrete hairpieces that match the natural color and texture of surrounding hair.

Brown-Gullette—who is certified through the International Association of Trichologists and who has presented local seminars on hair loss—takes a holistic approach to reversing alopecia, one that may require a commitment to a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition. After running medical tests to explore the root causes for thinning hair, Brown-Gullette employs several personalized treatments, including the use of electrotherapy, ultraviolet rays, and low-level laser therapy.

Sandwich lovers at Submarine House share juicy East Coast–style delicacies, slinging out crowd-pleasing ultra-stacked cheesesteaks and toasted deli subs. A staple of the shop, the cheesesteak packs grilled steak with enough protein to beef up Gumby and tops it with melted cheese and a sauce of mayonnaise, vinegar dressing, and hot-pepper relish ($5.59 for an 8"). Extend sandwiches mouthward with upgrades such as extra meat and cheese, mushrooms, or Italian-ized steaks slathered with marinara and pepperoni ($5.79+ for an 8"). Another NYC-inspired lunch, the regular sub slices salami onto a baked Italian bun ($4.99 for an 8"), and fresh deli sandwiches pep up turkey, ham, or veggies with a kick of house-made sauce ($4.99+ for an 8"). A selection of crispy pizzas ($6.79+), spicy wings ($6.99 for 8), and gyros ($5.19+) round out the shop’s sandwich-dominated menu, just as a strobe light rounds out a strong State of the Union speech.

Allurea Salon & Spa?s staffers don?t just cut and color hair?they help restore it with laser treatments that target balding areas on the scalp. They can certainly appreciate a full head of hair, as they spend much of the day straightening and texturizing locks or sewing in extensions for added length. At the same time, the team understands that hair doesn?t always grow where you want it, which is why Allurea includes waxing alongside the makeup applications and mani-pedis that fill out its service menu.

For James Michael Kahle, the molten material he uses to craft his sculptures and vessels is a living thing, an element that must be cooperated with in order to achieve the desired response. Since beginning his career at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1990, the artisan has come to master a number of methods for creating stunning visual effects, from melding metal and alloys into the glass to encasing air bubbles. James channels his skill into crafting pieces—such as installation pieces, prismatic sinks, and even memorial sculptures forged around the ashes of a departed loved one—for display and use around the home. The glassworker also invites groups into his studio for classes, vigilant as his students work their own pieces in lava-powered ovens reaching more than 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit.
