Situated amid the bustle of Dayton’s Bike Hub, Silver Fern Cafe offers both cyclists and those on foot a respite with its hot and cold concessions, drinks, and snacks. Open seven days a week in late May through early September, Silver Fern’s staff slings savory meat pies, burgers, giant hot dogs, and seasonal fruit smoothies, all of which its guests enjoy on the outdoor patio.
Slate-colored walls and exposed pipes lend an industrial air to the elegant red curtains and wooden wine racks of Serendipity Bistro. In fact, the curated wine list is one of the bistro's specialties, next to the flatbread pizzas and paninis made from scratch and paired with everything from turkey and apple chutney to shrimp artichoke pesto. Some evenings, guests can also share pitchers of sangria, a sweetened wine beverage the Spanish invented to lull pet tigers into their afternoon siestas.
Evans Bakery has sweets for every season. Its pies, whose flavors range from pumpkin to peanut butter, are perfect for fall feasts. For winter, nosh on a plate of the bakery's cookies, available in regular rounds or seasonal shapes, such as snowflakes and bells. For spring's first picnic, take a fresh loaf of Evans Bakery's bread to the park. The bakers also whip up custom cakes, such as this summery one, shaped like a pair of flip-flops. And year-round, the bakery serves the Best Glazed Donut in the Miami Valley, an honor bestowed upon the bakery by the Dayton Municipal Court in 2013.
Bellyfire caters to businesses, large-scale events, and busy families that don't have time to prepare homemade meals during the week. Bellyfire’s gourmand gang slaves over hot stoves to churn out culinary creations such as grilled salmon on bowtie pasta with a strawberry, red onion, and romaine salad; and sweet-and-sour pot roast with root vegetables and green-bean-tomato salad. Each meal consists of a palate-prepping salad and a hearty entree with two sides. In order to eliminate the drudgery of dish cleaning, all dinners come in disposable containers, which can be thrown out or fashioned into miniature toboggans for toy-poodle dogsled teams. Bellyfire can deliver meals hot and ready for immediate feasting or cold for storing and reheating.
