Landmarks of standup for decades, Connxtions Comedy Clubs remain mainstays for up-and-coming comics and national stars, with a roster of past performers that includes Sinbad, Drew Carey, Tim Allen, D. L. Hughley, and Rob Schneider. Headlining comedians, many seen on national television, keep the venues teetering Thursday–Saturday nights, whereas Wednesday nights host improv spectacles and open mics where rookies can begin their ascent into stardom or descent into miming. While refueling chuckle tanks, duos and groups can split a savory appetizer, such as fried pickle spears or buffalo popcorn shrimp, or enjoy a potent cocktail at the bar.
It started when Gerald Kubach became enamored with standup comedy. Looking to invest in the humor business, he and cofounder Mitch Kutash opened the very first Funny Bone Comedy Club in Pittsburg in 1982. Over 25 years later, the little club that could has turned into a national comedy institution, with branches in nearly every metropolitan city. While household names such as Jerry Seinfeld, Drew Carey, Roseanne Barr, and Tim Allen have cut their teeth on the clubs' stages, The Funny Bone continues to offer the first big breaks to up-and-coming local talent. All Funny Bones sport full-service bars to lubricate laughter – the Toledo location serves up a bouillabaisse of spicy Louisiana flavor at its adjoining restaurant Fat Fish Blue.
The instructors at Sylvan Learning Center understand the limitations of a one-size-fits-all classroom; they tailor tutoring and enrichment curricula to each student to meet specific goals. By interviewing pupils and gathering input from teachers and parents, the center's army of energetic study buddies can position students for success in subjects such as reading, math, writing, or study skills. Along with overseeing test-prep for ACTs and SATs, instructors help kids keep school breaks productive with academic camps that focus on specific skills such as math problem-solving and pitching tiny tents out of protractors and loose-leaf paper.
The Butterfly House fills its lush indoor botanical garden with more than a thousand butterflies, creating a tranquil and meditative space for guests to relax and take in the wonderful natural variety present in a single order of organisms. Representing diverse species from the Americas and Asia, this well-traveled population of Lepidopteras likes to flutter about, sipping nectar, and basking in the sun, much like an international beach party. Since butterflies live for a fleeting two to three weeks, the facility brings in more creatures and new species regularly, making each visit unique. The knowledgeable staff helps patrons learn about every stage of this magnificent creature’s life cycle, from its awkward pupa days to the search for a mate and, in twilight, retiring from its professional nectar collecting career to pursue a nectar collecting hobby.
