The echoes of contented barks reverberate across The Mutt Hutt’s 9,200-square-foot facility, where canines of all breeds sleep, nosh, and frolic in a safe and controlled environment. Daycare sessions include free and structured playtimes and multiple daily walks, allowing dogs to stretch their muscles and blow off steam. A midday rest between those activities gives them time to reenergize as they dream about playing catch in open meadows or chasing down cats with slender tails of beef jerky. The facility’s boarded residents follow a similar schedule, with the added perk of daily breakfast and dinner.

The Mutt Hutt’s staff also makes house calls, dropping by residences to keep an eye on pets. When they aren’t changing litter boxes or playing with lonely kittens, staffers clean messes off lawns so garden gnomes no longer have to hold their noses in disgust.

In 1995, Patty Hillkirk was working as a psychotherapist and dreaming of starting a camp for youth infected or affected by HIV/AIDS that would provide a safe environment for them to express themselves. Camp Dreamcatcher realizes this goal with a weeklong camp session in August where children aged 5–17 can interact with their peers. Campers and counselors may be coping with their own infection or the infection or death of a family member.

During the camp, youth can take part in 80 therapeutic programs, including music and psychotherapy; 35 educational sessions on pertinent topics such as depression and college preparation; and 150 recreational activities, including swimming, a ropes course, and the annual dance and talent show. Throughout the year, Camp Dreamcatcher also runs life-skills and leadership retreats for teenagers, training for counselors, community outreach, and family advocacy, as well as an Adopt-A-Family program during the holidays.

Meals on Wheels Delaware developed the Gas Cards for Caring Hearts program after volunteer drivers began reducing their weekly hours due to escalating gas prices. The volunteers cover 132 daily routes across the state, a total of 2,125 miles each day, which comprises a crucial aspect of the meal-delivery program's success. Volunteers not only provide seniors with a healthy meal—they offer companionship and help the seniors remain independent. Gas cards fund fuel costs so that drivers can continue to perform these vital services.
