A multi-faceted gym and innovative training facility, The Gym 111 offers all that you'd expect from a gym, including treadmills, free weights, fitness studios, and classes designed to improve everything from your golf swing to your overall quality of life. However, its features expand far beyond basic exercise, starting with its impressive staff members who each possess a bachelor’s degree and national personal-training certification. Despite their comparable credentials, trainers Errol, Bill, Ashley, Brandon, and Jay are hardly interchangeable. For instance, tennis professional Brandon leads the gym’s sport-specific and functional clinics, helping clients improve everything from their tennis serve to their overall fitness.
Since not every gym member has a sports-related goal in mind, The Gym 111 also offers personal training and a full schedule of original group fitness classes designed to improve both cardio and strength training amid a fun and supportive environment.
With rolling hills and lush, green woods in the background, expert instructors lead students out into the great blue Pacific for custom surfing lessons. During lessons, wave tamers certified in CPR, first aid, ocean safety, and mermaid diplomacy bestow burgeoning surfers with all necessary skills and ocean awareness, which helps surfers to keep their bearings and tackle whitecaps safely. Surf techniques and etiquette can be tailored to ease rookies into their comfort zones or amped up to challenge and heighten the skills of more experienced boarders.
Tamalpais Surf Club also rents boards and wetsuits for surfers looking to paddle out on their own, and their lending inventory includes vintage boards from renowned shapers. To throw more adventure into the mix, the team organizes yoga-surf retreats and surf camps in exotic locales such as Costa Rica and Hawaii, where groups can immerse themselves in the country's culture, cuisine, and bilingual waves.
At Boca Riding Club, friendly instructors lead riders through lush greenery and teach riders of any skill level through both English- and Western-style riding lessons. Veteran instructors tailor each lesson to students' individual goals, working on basic riding skills, advanced techniques, or highway-merging tips. Riders spend around 80% of their lessons on the horse, with the remainder of their time devoted to saddling and after-ride care.
The tree-and-lake-dotted ranch at Boca Riding Club also hosts public group rides and children's summer-camp sessions. Under the guidance of instructor and manager Elizabeth Constantin, riders walk, trot, canter, or ride off into the sunset, depending on ability and experience filming Hollywood westerns.
An Irish blessing over the entrance of Paddy McGee’s reads: “May the friendships you make here, be those which endure.” Under the green-and-white stained-glass dome of the Irish pub, comrades might meet over a pint of frothy beer or a sporting event beaming out from flat-screen TVs. The menu offers more substantive sustenance, including selections such as towering burgers, fish 'n’ chips, and philly cheese steaks that complement a broad range of liquors and brews. At night, diners pay no cover to enjoy the music of live bands, which resounds in the bar, spilling out onto the breezy patio and the street beyond, free to find a new job as elevator music or the mechanical lullaby in a baby mobile.
Though SoLita Delray's lounge-like atmosphere hosts live music and DJs on the weekend, nightlife isn't even its main draw. In addition to a bustling lounge and courtyard, SoLita—or "south of Little Italy"— houses a hopping kitchen where chefs cook Italian meals using generations-old family recipes. Local and imported ingredients give zings of flavor to all dishes. Fresh pastas come draped in sauces from light, spicy tomato broth to rich mascarpone cream. For heartier fare, chefs grill rib-eye steaks, veal chops, and filet mignon or roast whole fish with lemon, olive oil, and jokes about diminutive fin size.
Part miniature country club and part botanical garden, Putt'n Around Delray Beach weaves two outdoor 18-hole courses through a verdant jungle of more than 300 species of plants. In the Everglades course, coconut palm trees, flowers, and a tree autographed by past golfers provide shade for bronze statues of animals, such as manatees and alligators. Putt'n Around's ocean-themed course recreates a typical day of mini golfing at the beach, sporting crystal-clear waters and trick holes only visible with metal detectors. Putt'n Around adds more artwork every month and decorates the courses for holiday celebrations, erecting haunted trails for Halloween and replacing the green carpeting with tacky sweaters for Bill Cosby's birthday.
