The Global ComedyFest corrals some of the best and brightest comedians on the international circuit into Vancouver for a marathon of laughs, fun, and moderately uncomfortable first dates. Big names such as zany former MTV staple Tom Green perform alongside up-and-comers in more than 30 performances throughout the festival. Eschew the everyday monodimensional comedy with a combination stand-up and comedy 3-D video show featuring Canada's own Reza Peyk, Jy Harris, and Gary Fong, or opt for a night of “it’s funny because it’s true” laughs at the Gerry Dee show. The Edge of the Fest performance pushes the festival’s edgiest artists to the limits of social acceptability, while the Best of the Fest showcases top comedians such as Greg Behrendt and Peter Chao.

The members of Instant Theatre founded the Vancouver International Improv Festival to not only bring performers from across the globe together, but to also spotlight fresh comedy around the corner. Improvisers from faraway lands such as Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle share the stage with Vancouver natives, performing in their own troupes and mixing into ad-hoc ensembles for memorable sketches. The week culminates with a super-group performance by the International Ensemble—a group of participating artists that forms for one week only to tackle new forms and forge new collaborations.

Vancouver TheatreSports League mingles the adrenaline rush of athletic events with the dramatic drollery of improv comedy to produce sidesplitting shows that are crafted on the spot for 60 minutes of audience-integrated outlandishness. Audience earthlings yell out suggestions as the multitalented improvisers ignite games and challenge themselves to bring laughter to your tears. Scared Scriptless's comedic members cultivate the genre's most admired styles while pushing envelopes into feral territory previously only trekked by wild yard gnomes and hyena nightmares.

X92.9 flexes a muscular mix of alternative-rock legends and tomorrow’s darlings as this summer’s outdoor X-FEST Calgary fills historic Fort Calgary with good vibrations. This year’s lineup springs from the earth like a talented series of Whac-a-Mole, featuring Jane’s Addiction. Recharged, regroomed, and sporting their first new album in years, Perry Farrell and the crew rock and rampage like veteran teenagers. Returning to Calgary to thank fans and get their toothbrush back, Weezer take the fest by the scruff of its neck and stroke its chin, eliciting audiences to purr along to their deep bowl of hits. X-FEST also features appearances by warhorse punkers Social Distortion, bounding enthusiasts House of Pain, and throbbing adventurists AWOLNATION. A slew of prime Canadian rockers is also on hand to charm attendees, including The Rural Alberta Advantage and Michael Bernard Fitzgerald.

As half of “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” duo Brooks & Dunn, Ronnie Dunn has played everywhere from the arena to the rodeo, beer joints to casinos. His Texas twang and electric guitar chronicle 20 years of wide-ranging exploits on his self-titled debut solo album. After he and Kix Brooks played their last show together in 2010, Dunn set to work as the new album's sole producer and main songwriter. "This time around, I baked it,” he said. “I baked it and cooked it, and cooked it again.” His signature rowdy honky-tonk kicks through in the single “Let the Cowboy Rock,” and the poignant ballad of forgiveness, “Bleed Red," urges listeners to “turn the anger into water / let it slip through our hands.”
