Since 2007, the Robots-4-U team has been teaching children a program of STEM?science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Children absorb skills and knowledge through entertaining interactions with instructors, other campers, and robot kits. The camp maintains a 16:1 student to instructor ratio, ensuring children receive the proper amount of individual attention. Campers build robot kits comprising a brain unit and sensory appendages, which replicate seeing, hearing, touching and reading minds. Once the bots are assembled, children enter their creations into racing, dancing, and battle-bot challenges.
Painting with Patience hosts relaxing do-it-yourself evenings of colorful exploration for painters with or without previous experience. Guests need only bring a lust for life along with their favorite wine and snacks, as they uncork and follow a progression of easy-to-follow instructions. Each class focuses on one specific design, allowing students to follow along with others while adding their own flair to images such as gnomes or Italian waterways. Students can create their own simulacra of famous works including Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Munch’s The Scream, and Monet’s Bridge Over a Pond of Water Moccasins. Multiple classes are scheduled each week and include all painting supplies as well as ice buckets and corkscrews. The artistic educators at Painting with Patience can also wrangle groups of 10–25 artisans for adult or children’s private painting parties.
Understanding that each child learns differently, the staff members of Sylvan Learning Center’s numerous study centers design custom lesson programs. Based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews, the staff works with students to help them firmly grasp basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and how to remember facts without tattooing them to their chests. Programs target students in kindergarten through grade 12 and mold to various learning styles, helping kids feel more comfortable in the classroom. After-school or summer classes can ready high-school students for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or wow college admissions officers with their superior writing skills, exemplary test scores, and willingness to arm-wrestle the school mascot.
