  • Volk Swaggin on the Lake
If it was possible to marry a car, most Volkswagen owners would renew their vows regularly. There's just something about the German vehicle that breeds rabid enthusiasm and inspires "I Love My VW" bumper stickers. For those who've appointed their Volkswagen as sole inheritor in their will, or those who just want to camp out by the water while enjoying live music, food, drinks, and celebrity appearances, the first annual Volk Swaggin on the Lake festival brings a weekend of joy and relaxation to Sycamore Bend Park. Once campers pitch their tents on Friday, they're ready to feast upon Saturday and Sunday's buffet of entertainment. Saturday features a Q&A with former Dallas Cowboy Cory Procter, who tackles questions about his NFL days and his love of heavy metal music. The rest of the day is filled with a variety of acts, including Cathy & Co's belly dancing, fiddle champion Aaron Mingus, classic rockers Dusty Vinyl, and the Led Zeppelin cover band Swan Song. Sunday brings the VW-only car show, in which aficionados gander at various Volkswagen makes and models before a panel of judges awards the prime picks of the lot.

  • WineFest 2012
The 500, Inc.'s name stems from its very first fundraising campaign in 1965. Setting out to raise $5,000 for the Dallas Civic Opera, founder Polly Lou Moore convinced 500 individuals to each donate $10. It took only three months to collect every dollar. Since then, The 500, Inc. has aided more than 40 of the area's visual-, theatrical-, and musical-arts organizations by raising more than $12 million in donations and countless hours of volunteer support—all helping to honor the legacy of those first 500 mustaches doodled over Alexander Hamilton’s portrait.

  • Bedford Blues & BBQ
Bedford Blues & BBQ, a two-day festival held on the grounds adjacent to Bedford’s City Hall, enthralls attendees with performances from blues masters, barbecue-style edibles from local grill gurus, and purchasable crafts from artisans. Headlining act Buddy Guy, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee whose electric-blues playing style influenced guitar legends such as Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, entrances audiences with soulful guitar riffs and a spinning hypnosis wheel. Grammy-winning musician Jonny Lang also takes the stage, proving to skeptics that the child prodigy, with age, has matured in lyric-writing and beard-growing abilities. While vendor fare sates the appetites of concertgoers, a barbecue cookoff competition held on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (admission not included with Groupon) challenges local meat smokers to concoct culinary masterpieces, impressing ticketholders with small samples of brisket, burnt ends, and other grill-marked cuisine.

  • Counting Crows
More than half a century ago, three partners raised a vibrant, multicolored tent on an underdeveloped industrial site and established the Westbury Music Fair. It followed its first production, The King and I, with a decade of top-name talent and Broadway musicals. Then, recognizing its place on the theater scene was permanent, it planted its roots as a fully enclosed theater-in-the-round. Expanding its repertoire to match its new digs, the theater showcased performers such as The Who, Bruce Springsteen, and Julie Andrews. Today, past a lounge blazing in purple and red lights, guests find that same circular stage hosting equally great musical acts, musical theater, and competitive musical chairs.
