Dallas Athletes Racing's director, Dan Jones, likes to pepper his runs with fun. He creates themed events throughout the year, starting with a St. Patrick's Day Triathlon and culminating with a costumed Monster Triathlon held around Halloween. He hosts a load of events, but one of his favorites is the Wounded Warrior Half Marathon and 10k—an event that raised over $60,000 to benefit military charities in 2013 alone. Whatever type of event he's organizing, Dan waits at the finish line to witness the runners experience "the satisfaction of completing the event and enjoying themselves."

Emulating an atmosphere similar to classic bike shops of a bygone era, Cadence Cyclery of McKinney, now with a second location in Highland Village, blends seamlessly into the historic arts-and-culinary district that surrounds it. Tucked inside an industrial space bordered by exposed bricks, the shop plays host to more bikes than a BMX champ's hoarding shed, including bikes from brands such as BH Bikes, Cervelo, Giant, Pivot Cycles, Scott, Yeti, and Alchemy custom bikes. Two-wheelers span the spectrum of biking needs, from mini roadsters for kids to streamlined cycles primed for professional racing. Once patrons have tracked down their ideal bicycle, they can keep it gliding smoothly with regular tune-ups. On Saturday mornings, riders of all quad strengths meet at the cyclery and embark on a 30-mile group expedition around downtown McKinney and the surrounding countryside, socializing and dropping a trail of rusty spokes to guide them home.

Mud-covered creatures slide down hills, slither over ropes, and plunge headfirst into tangled cargo nets. Around them, the towering walls of an abandoned rock quarry reverberate with the crowd's animalistic growls and cheers. Underneath each coat of mud stands a runner participating in Caveman Crawl's 5K adventure race and mud-run course. Adult racers, separated into timed waves, race against their shoe-clipped timing chips as they bound over, under, and through more than 20 annually changing obstacles. Past challenges involved leaping over lily pads. Smaller racers, aged 4–6 or 7–13, navigate a shorter course with compact versions of the larger obstacles. Along a newly added mountain-bike course, Dual Sport Challenge participants pedal across rocky hills and through swaths of mud and chilly water, all while giving the right of way to commuting mountain goats. The race ends with a massive barbecue where participants celebrate their victory over nature and often receive prizes while refueling with food, drinks, and live music.
