Fishing the Bering Sea in the middle of winter demands strong wills—which can come together in times of treacherous weather and 100-foot waves or come to blows about who performs better in the three-legged crabwalk race. Selected audience members will also have the chance to don the survival suits from the Time Bandit. Following the story-swapping and previously unreleased video footage, greenhorns and avid fans will have the opportunity to launch questions at the captains, wave giant foam claws, and learn how to communicate in claw-snap Morse code.
A lot has changed in the century since the Paramount Theatre was founded, but the theater's crowd-pleasing entertainment wouldn't have been out of place in Aurora's turn-of-the-century theater scene. When the Venice-inspired art-deco venue was first built, it joined an already-bustling local tradition of vaudeville, silent films, concerts, and circus acts. Photographs dating back to 1931 guided a 1976 restoration, in which artisans completely retraced and repainted eight original murals, re-gilded the fluted columns, and patched up the sheets of every ghost. Concerts, comedy, and community events fill the theater when it's not occupied by the dazzling production values of a professional musical-theater company, which launched what the Chicago Tribune called a "thrilling debut season" in 2011.

A dressed-down cast of professional Hollywood- and Chicago-trained sleuths circulates through the crowd, sniffing out phony alibis and asking the hard questions to solve the mystery of each whodunit. Before the night is over, the fictional criminal is cuffed and the most accurately detecting diner takes home a prize package.

BaRed takes its name from the crimson brick walls of the historic building that it calls home—but that name also carries cheekier implications. Owner Zach Young has designed a space that begins the day as a rustic New American restaurant, but fades into night as a low-lit, romantic cocktail lounge filled with sensuous live music ranging from hip-hop to jazz. The vintage art posters and hanging globe lamps create an atmosphere that's equally appropriate for a breakfast of fresh pastries and espresso, an evening spread of eclectic, international cuisine, and an interrogation from a cop who only speaks in beat poetry. Charcuterie platters are served alongside chilled oysters from the raw bar.
Perhaps the biggest draw, though, is its cocktail program. BaRed's head mixologist's original recipes and twists on classics have been praised by 5280, which attributed the "meticulously crafted cocktails" to "top-notch liquor (think cognac cocktails and house-barreled gin)."
