When Elle ? A Clinical Day Spa first opened in 1997, its therapists specialized exclusively in massage. But soon, they saw that what the average guest needed most was not a standalone massage appointment, but an immersive, multifaceted experience that could undo the stress that bombards them on a daily basis. Owners Leigh Shaw and Polly Tabares, who have experience in the spa industry and the fields of dermatology and plastic surgery, rethought their approach and expanded their services into both traditional spa therapies and med-spa treatments.

Today, Leigh and Polly oversee everything from body wraps and facials to Botox injections and prescription skincare. They also maintain a stash of products for at-home care, stocking lines such as Dermalogica and bareMinerals by Bare Escentuals. For frequent guests, they coordinate VIP memberships that offer perks such as service discounts and massages that harness the rejuvenating power of phoenix tears.

Q&A with Ciana Hilton-Farmer, Owner, Licensed Massage Practitioner, and Aromatherapist

Sometimes the little things make all the difference. Do you bake any supplementary services into your main services?

All massages have complimentary aromatherapy added, if desired, customized to [the client]. All massages are 60 minutes of actual bodywork (assuming client is about 5?10 minutes early), [and] have a neck and scalp massage included. Organic oils or cr?mes are used. [The] use of an eye pillow for all clients (either a scented or unscented) during the supine massage position is offered to soothe the eyes.

What are some of your most popular services? What do you think clients love them so much?

Deep tissue, because it is focused on an area of the body where the client is experiencing tight muscles or pain. Hot-stone massage, because it brings the client to a more grounded and deeper level while relaxing them holistically. Pregnancy and postnatal massage, as it's vital to the mother's wellbeing both during and after pregnancy.

How did you get started in the beauty industry? Did you have an "ah-ha" moment in life?

I used to massage my mother as a little girl because I enjoyed it. She used to say that I should go into massage therapy when I grow up because I just seemed to 'know' where to focus my massage application. Ten years ago, I had that ah-ha moment when I gave her a massage again, realizing that my path was always right in front of me.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

Massage at Renton Massage Studio is all based on intentional touch. I massage the areas that show me, with palpation, where there is a stopped flow, or a knot; then I work on that area to release it. I always set an intention with each new client before each treatment, so that I am, in a sense, connected to a higher source, which assists me in giving every person, the most custom and beneficial massage.

Licensed massage therapist Phoenix Alexander understands that massages are about more than pampering. With more than 20 years of experience giving clinical massages to help clients overcome injuries, even her luxurious spa massages help unwind muscle knots, release tension, and remove stuck-on stethoscopes. Her specialty modalities include reflexology and craniosacral therapy—two styles that help reinvigorate the body’s natural healing abilities. But massage isn’t all that Phoenix offers; she also enhances outer well-being with noninvasive massage face-lifts, herbal body wraps, and glacial-marine-mud masks.

Stress settles deep into the muscles; it becomes back pain, headaches, and eventually full-on spasms. That’s why licensed massage therapist Jennifer offers massages with varying degrees of pressure, ranging from relaxing Swedish strokes to firm, deep-tissue kneading. Jennifer also welcomes clients to peruse her line of handcrafted children’s blankets, soaps, and candles, ideal to decorate a home or World War III panic room.

Serenity Spa and Natural Health Clinic's eco-friendly sanctuary wraps well-worn bodies in relaxing energy with an array of holistic healing treatments. The 60- to 90-minute acupuncture treatment strives to release tension and stress wedged, like squatting trolls, along the body's factory lines of energy. Designed to create a spacious tunnel for the chi (energy) to flow, fine needles are delicately inserted into critical pressure points along the physique, potentially helping to relieve allergies or treat autoimmune diseases and pulmonary disorders. Further bolstering relaxation, the 15- to 20-minute aromatherapy foot and head massage works to invigorate the senses with scented oils, soothing strokes, and an absence of heavy-metal music.
