The Sierra Nevada Mountains don’t just make for beautiful vistas—their lower slopes also play host to some of the region’s best grapes. Winery by the Creek and Charles B. Mitchell Vineyards, nestled in the foothills, harvests the vines and transforms them into nuanced, award winning varietals, such as Black Muscat. The winery plays host to a slew of other regional wines as well, including Splashdown’s Zinfandels and Charles B. Mitchell’s award-winning grand reserve. As Dionysian evangelists, the winery’s staff hosts tasting events, many of which are held on the patio by the creek that overlooks the mountains. For a peek behind the scenes, you can spelunk into the onsite wine cave where the wines are aged. There, you can sip their way through candle-lit futures tastings, sampling up-and-coming wines right from the barrel.
As the head coach of Hangtown Saber Club, Ted Smith extols the benefits of specialization. His club focuses solely on the saber, a sword that bears some marked differences from the other two fencing weapons, the epee and the foil. Not only is it the lightest of the three, it's the only one that permits scoring with both the point and the blade edge?just like real sword fighting or popping a child's birthday balloons with a calligraphy pen. Given these unique rules, the result is a fast, aggressive style of competition. Both group and private lessons start with a warm-up and some aerobic conditioning, followed by drills on footwork and technique. Before class lets out, all students also have the chance to hook up to the electric scoring machines and engage their classmates in some spirited bouts.
Cliff Drysdale, a 45-time Davis Cup veteran, is more than a familiar face in professional tennis?he's one of its signature voices as well, having spent more than 30 years commentating matches on ESPN. Students of his coaching system get to tap into that deep well of experience at In-Shape Sport clubs all across California. At each location, experienced tennis pros lead four-week clinics that cover the fundamentals of the sport, organize competitive leagues for more advanced players, and tailor lessons to teens. Additionally, tennis socials help guests practice the sport as they meet fellow players and use particularly ferocious serves to deliver their phone number to an opponent.
At Mother Lode River Center’s 19-acre riverside camp, wooden bridges and river-stone paths crisscross beneath the shade of heritage oaks. For 40 years, the staff has upheld a mission of conserving this verdant expanse along the American River through recreational and educational programs. Leading half- and multiday whitewater-rafting trips on the South, Middle, and North Forks, guides ride with paddlers into Class III and IV+ rapids. Back on land, Mother Lode's team helps guests overcome real and perceived barriers through obstacles on the ropes course. Practicing what it preaches, the center adheres to sustainability practices such as heating water using solar energy, operating vehicles that run on 100% waste vegetable oil, and letting wild tents forage freely on the campgrounds.
The founders of Adventure Connection believe in magic. Not the trickery of the stage or spells cast by mysterious neighbors, but of the spiritual, environmental, and economic boons of the rivers they have spent their lives traversing. More than 25 years ago, a group of believers came together to share their love and passion for the rivers of California, building a company that combines whitewater rafting, wine tasting, and camping along the waterways they love.
Over the course of the last two decades, the staff has guided boats of up to 18 people through the rapids of the American, Kaweah, and Tuolumne Rivers, coasting through mild ripples or white-knuckling class V rapids. Groups often leave the rafts behind to explore the scenic countryside and renowned wineries of the surrounding El Dorado region or to pitch tents and sleep under the stars.
